Giants Draft Targets: Tristan Wirfs and Jedrick Wills Jr.
Last week I previewed one of the top defensive prospects in the draft, Isaiah Simmons. With the draft being only one day away. the Giants have been doing extensive research on everybody on the board; including QB Justin Herbert. Now, Dave Gettleman is a bad GM, but he can’t be that bad, right? If the Giants do not go defense with their first pick, they should spend it on an offensive lineman. They need to improve on the line in order to protect Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones. Nate Solder has not lived up to the big contract and Will Hernandez is still developing. The top two lineman in this draft are Tristan Wirfs out of Iowa and Jedrick WIlls Jr. out of Alabama.
Tristan Wirfs
Tristan Wirfs has the perfect body composition needed to dominate at the NFL level. He played the majority of his games at right tackle while also getting some experience at left tackle. This most recent season, his dominant play at tackle earned him Second Team All-American honors and the Big 10 Lineman of the Year. Wirfs has excellent lateral quickness and opens up the running lanes well, which should fare well for Barkley. He is a player who has all the makings of an elite offensive lineman, but one of his setbacks his that he does not always use his tool to their fullest potential. Wirfs has been mocked to the Giants on multiple occasions but we’ll have to wait and see what Gettleman decides to do on draft night.
Jedrick Wills Jr.
Jedrick Wills had the pleasure of blocking for Tua while at Alabama. He is big, wide, and extremely athletic. Wills moves like a tight end in the open field when blocking down field and adjusts well to moving targets. He has the footwork of a basketball player which allows him to stay in front of the best pass rushers in the country. He is shorter than you would like a tackle to be but he engages rushers well. You can expect to Wills to end up anywhere between a consistent starter and an All-Pro.
Final Thoughts
These are the two best lineman in the draft. You can expect the Giants to target either of these players at number 4 or if they trade down to accumulate more draft assets. There are a lot of teams that need quarterbacks that might look to trade up, and you do not want to be on the outside looking in on those top 3 guys (Burrow, Tua, and Herbert). Isaiah Simmons is definitely the flashy pick at 4. He would immediately improve their pass rush, but right now, the focus is on Jones and Barkley. I know last week I said I would pick Simmons if I was the Giants, but after researching these two guys, my mind might have changed. Thankfully I will be watching on Thursday and won’t have the responsibility of disappointing Giants fans everywhere.
