Fantasy Football Preview: New England Patriots vs Los Angeles Chargers

The last time the New England Patriots faced off against the Los Angeles Chargers they won. By a lot. In fact, it was a 45-0 blowout. But that was last year. Now, both the Patriots and Chargers face each other again where New England has a new roster that’s a work in progress. Which players from both New England and Los Angeles will be fantasy gems this weekend? Here is the fantasy football preview: New England Patriots vs Los Angeles Chargers!

Must play:

Damien Harris

Patriots get back to bully ball behind Damien Harris

Damien Harris is coming off of a two touchdown game against the New York Jets. Now, Harris faces a Los Angeles Chargers team that has struggled against the run so far this season. On average the Chargers are giving up 132 rushing yards per game and a touchdown. That should be the expectation for Harris coming into this matchup. Harris should be either RB2 or in the flex position.

Prediction: 20 carries, 125 rushing yards, 1 touchdown

Justin Herbert

Bill Belichick praises L.A. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert: 'I don't think you're going to find too many better than him' - oregonlive.com

Justin Herbert has been on a tear so far this season. Without a doubt Herbert should be in the starting lineup. The Patriots defense on average has given up just about 260 passing yards per game this season. In fact, the only two quarterbacks that have struggled against the New England defense are Zach Wilson and Mike White. Herbert has shown improvement since the blowout loss to New England last season. Herbert should be able to find either Mike Williams or Keenan Allen throughout the game.

Prediction: 30-40, 300 passing yards, 3 touchdowns

Also start:

Hunter Henry

Welcome home Hunter Henry! Henry returns to face his former team for the first time since signing with New England. He had a slow start, but in the last few weeks he has built on field chemistry with Mac Jones and has become one of Jones’ favorite target. Henry has a touchdown reception in the last four game for the Patriots.

Prediction: 5 receptions. 50 receiving yards, 1 touchdown

Mike Williams

Mike Williams has stepped up in big time games this season. Yes the Patriots record is nothing spectacular but this is still a big game. With Keenan Allen most likely being covered by J.C. Jackson, Devin McCourty nursing an injury and Jonathan Jones being placed on IR, there is a problem in the New England secondary on who can cover Mike Williams. Time will tell of who it will be, but, Williams should be able to take advantage of this secondary.

Prediction: 8 catches, 140 receiving yards, 1 touchdown

Toss up:

Kendrick Bourne

Kendrick Bourne projects as a starter-level wide receiver for the Patriots - Pats Pulpit

Just like Hunter Henry, Kendrick Bourne is continuing to build on field chemistry with Mac Jones and is slowly becoming one of the favorite targets. Why is Bourne a toss up in this fantasy football preview: New England Patriots vs Los Angeles Chargers? With guys like Jakobi Meyes, Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, Bourne might not get as many receptions. But, as he displayed last week, Bourne can be involved in trick plays. When Bourne does get receptions, he gains a good amount of yards. If fantasy owners are lacking a wide receiver or someone for a flex, Bourne is currently owned in only 3.7% of leagues on ESPN.

Prediction: 4 catches, 60 yards, 1 touchdown

Avoid:

Austin Ekeler

Chargers injury update: RB Austin Ekeler misses Thursday practice

Do not play Austin Ekeler. Yes, he’s hurt right now. Even if Ekeler was healthy, he shouldn’t be played. Why? The Patriots have given up two touchdowns all season to running backs (one on the ground, one receiving). Since Ekeler is dealing with an injury, he won’t be completely healthy for this game which could lead to problems for the Chargers offense.

Prediction: 20 carries, 50 rushing yards
