With the 32nd pick in the 2019 NFL draft, the NEw England Patriots select….N’Keal Harry, Wide Receiver from Arizona State.
Can you believe the Pats actually made the pick and didn’t trade out of the first rounds like always? Well, the Patriots got a good one with their top choice.
Harry is a big bodied receiver. At 6’3″ and 220lbs Harry is a physical outside receiver. In his three seasons at ASU, he broke 38 tackles according to pro football focus. He was able to use his physicality to break tackles to pick up yards after the catch. He also ran a 4.53 40-yard dash at the combie, so he is able to blend the size with good speed. With the ball in his hands he’s extremely elusive but this can get him into trouble at times. He will try to get too much on play, reversing field when he could just fall forward. N’Keal is a terrific blocker for a wideout, as he not only uses his size to his advantage, but he also has a natural willingness to do it.
We know that Brady doesnt have the down field accuracy he once had, instead relying on short to intermediate passes to hurt team with a death by a thousand cuts apporach. Harry fits this philosophy well. While he is ore than capable of lining up and getting vertical on his man, he is best when targeted in the 10-19 yard range and letting him make yards after the catch. Another thing about Harry Brady will apprecitate is that he is a natural route runner. He runs ahrd crisp routes, which allows him to get seperation.
Harry did have some problems with drops at ASU. Now, I am personally not too concerneced about it because he also had some terrific catches. His drops pont back to his open field abilities. He knows he his a threat in the open fild, so he will look up to the field to survey it before securing the pass. This leads to dropped passes on some routine ctches.
Persnoanlly of all the recievrs in the draft, Harry was my favorite. I wrote about Metcalf but he’s more of a workout warrior who faded due to his tape. Marquiese Brown is 170lbs soaking wet so how long will he really last? AJ Brown is the only player I’d have to rival Harry, but I belive the Patriots got the better of the two. Michael Lombardi of the NFL Netwrok, and you know, the Lombardi family, said of N’Keal Harry,” he’s a freakin’ beast”.
Let the tape speak for itself.
