Don’t Sleep On Collin McHugh
Yesterday the Red Sox signed righty Collin McHugh to a 1-year deal with a base salary of 600k. McHugh can increase how much he makes based on performance bonuses for innings and days on the active roster. McHugh pitched for the Astros as both a starter and reliever from 2014-2019 and has a career ERA of 3.95.
I like this signing. At this point what do the Sox have to lose by taking a flyer on McHugh? He can patch the gap as the number 4 starter as Chris Sale tries to figure out what the hell is going on with his elbow. As a starter, McHugh consistently made 25-33 starts a year between 2014 and 2016 before the injury bug bit him in 2017 where he was only able to start 12 games. In that 3 year window, he posted a 43-26 record with a combined 3.65 ERA. That is a solid line for a number 4 or 5 starter.
Again, that was when he was healthy and just shows what he is capable of. This contract is a “prove yourself” contract and can end up being a huge under the radar signing for the Sox if the 32-year-old can regain form as a consistent arm in the rotation or bullpen.
Before I go, I just want to go on record of saying the Red Sox will win 90 games this year and will win the Wild Card game. Period. This team is a lot better than anyone is giving them credit for. Eovaldi and Mchugh both have to prove themselves and I think they will in a big way. Add that to the offense that is still dangerous, it will be a surprisingly good summer for the Sox. Won’t be the 108 wins from 2018, but still respectable season. Finally, can we please give Alex Verdugo a chance? The kid can play and plays with great energy with him. Yes, I understand he is no Mookie Betts, but that does not mean he can’t play or can’t help us get back to October baseball. All I am asking is just give him a chance.
