DeAndre Baker Turns Himself In for Armed Robbery

Picture this: You are a former first round pick for one of the most prestigious franchises in all of sports. You are one of the most promising young defensive backs in the NFL and a building block for the next great Giants defense. You have your entire professional football career ahead of you but in one night you might have completely thrown it all away.

Who is this describing? Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker. Baker turned himself in this morning on charges of armed robbery. He and Quinton Dunbar had warrants issued for their arrests earlier this week after they supposedly robbed a house party. According to Yahoo News, $12,000 in cash and watches worth up to $25,000 were taken. Baker is facing eight charges in total, four of armed robbery and four of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Who is DeAndre Baker

Baker was the 30th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Coming from Georgia, he was one of the top cornerbacks in his draft year. He finished his rookie season with 61 total tackles with no forced fumbles and no interceptions. He had an up and down season as he had some breakdown in coverage and often looked lost on the field. Baker improved as the season went on and started to look like a true first round talent. He, Sam Beal, new Giant Xavier McKinney, and Jabrill Peppers were going to anchor the Giants secondary for years to come.

What this means

Baker may have ruined his entire career with this decision. I read from one source (honestly I do not remember where so PLEASE do not quote me) that he could be facing up to a maximum 15 years in prison. There have been multiple reports this week that this whole incident is a case of mistaken identity. Witnesses have said that the Baker and Dunbar were not part of this incident. However, that seems to be a moot point because Baker turned himself in early this morning. We do not know any further information at this point so once we know more, there will be a follow up post from me.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, how stupid can you be. You have a full career ahead of you with one of the most prestigious franchises in all of sports and now it may all be gone. Baker was supposed to be an integral part of the Giants defense. Furthermore, he was one of the most promising young corners in the entire league now that all may be gone. Good job, Baker, you may have ruined your NFL career and because of one decision, it may be all over.
