Day 1 Reaction to New York Giants Free Agency
Day 1 of NFL free agency has come and gone. The Patriots were major players on day 1 making a ton of moves. They brought in the likes of Jonnu Smith, Matthew Judon, Hunter Henry, and many more names. The Giants on the other hand have been very quiet so far. Like I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, the Giants have many holes and they all cannot be solved by splurging in free agency. However, the New York Giants have made a few moves so far in free agency. Let’s break them down here.
Leonard Williams re-signs for 3 years, $45 million guaranteed
The Giants were able to come to terms with their sack leader from 2020. Leonard Williams has had an up and down career so far. He had a lot of hype when he was drafted with the sixth overall pick by the Jets in 2015. He was a dominant player at USC, but he did not live up to the hype while playing for the Jets. Dave Gettleman acquired Williams in 2019 for a 2020 third round pick and a 2021 fifth round pick. That was a hefty price for a player who simply did not show he was worth it.
However, he regained his USC form in 2020, finishing the season as the Giants sack leader with 11.5. This performance led to him being franchise tagged and then eventually signing a deal worth $45 million guaranteed over the next 3 years. The Giants will need Williams to keep playing like he did in 2020 for this to be worth it.
John Ross signs for 1 year, $1 million guaranteed
I recently wrote about how wide receiver is a position of need for the New York Giants to acquire via the draft for free agency. They added to that position today by signing former top 10 pick, John Ross. I am not a fan of this deal at all. Yes, Ross is an absolute speedster who can go and get it, but the Giants already have Darius Slayton. Slayton has had a better career than Ross despite being drafted many rounds later. Ross was a very promising player coming out of Washington, but a combination of not staying healthy and undisclosed reasons, has not been able to put it all together. Like Williams, this is a change of scenery acquisition and maybe that will do Ross some good.
Dalvin Tomlinson Walks to Minnesota
This is the biggest story line for the Giants so far in free agency. DT Dalvin Tomlinson signed a 2-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings worth up to $22 million. Tomlinson was a mainstay on the Giants defensive line ever since he was drafted out of Alabama. He appeared in every single game since being drafted. He was also one of the most disciplined players as he was one of the fewest penalized players in the NFL. Luckily for the Giants, they still have Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence on the inside of the DL, but losing Tomlinson certainly hurts.
What I hope comes
I am still holding out hope that the Giants bring in Kenny Golladay. He is the perfect player for the Giants and will immediately step in as the team’s number 1 wide out. If they are unable to land Golladay, I would not be surprised if the Giants targeted a top receiver in the draft like Devonta Smith or Jaylen Waddle. The Giants have been underwhelming so far in free agency, and Golladay would certainly spice things up. The Giants were competitive in 2020, but still have MANY areas they need to improve in order to become an actual contender.
