Captain Marvel is the newest superhero movie and the 21st in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The film stars Brie Larson as the title character along with Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelson, Jude Law, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Clark Gregg, and Annette Bening. Being on my Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies list, Captain Marvel has some high expectations. Let’s dig in.
I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s my favorite movie franchise ever. So it truly pains me to say that Captain Marvel is not a good movie. The best way I can describe the movie is it is just lifeless. There’s nothing in the movie worth rooting for and that’s shocking for a Marvel movie. I thought Brie Larson as Captain Marvel was fine but I never felt she was worth rooting for. When emotional moments happened, you don’t feel anything and that’s a huge problem.
The humor wasn’t good either which is something that is usually a strength for Marvel. There were moments in the film where the audience was supposed to laugh and the theater was silent. Honestly, the only thing I liked was the return of Nick Furry. The de-aging on Sam Jackson was pretty spot on and it was cool seeing the origins of the man who formed the Avengers. But another huge complaint I had was the way he lost his eye. It’s the stupidest way he could have lost it and I now hate that its cannon.
In conclusion, Captain Marvel is a major disappointment and one of the worst MCU movies to date. It’s not a poorly made film, but when someone like me who loves superhero movies finds no joy in a freaking superhero movie, something went wrong.
I hope Captain Marvel does better with a cast of superheroes around her. We’ll find out in Avengers: Endgame.
