Bruins Captain Patrice Bergeron reportedly nearing deal with the Team
The Bruins are reportedly working on a one-year deal to bring back captain Patrice Bergeron, per Joe Macdonald of the Worchester Telegram & Gazette. The soon to be 37-year-old center is coming off a strong 18th season in the league. One where he nabbed his league record breaking fifth Frank J. Selke trophy award while also continuing to put up strong offensive numbers.

Bergeron’s potential new deal and the Bruins
Bergeron is coming off his eight-year contract signed back in the summer of 2013. This pervious contract carried an average salary cap hit of $6.875 million per season. The new deal will ideally carry a lesser cap hit and it will also give both the Bruins and Bergeron flexibility in the future. Having Bergeron hopefully back in the fold is a huge positive for the Bruins.
The direction of the Bruins if Bergeron signs a deal
After Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney’s press conference following the firing of former Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy earlier this month, many were left feeling the direction of the team would be impacted greatly by Bergeron’s decision. With Bergeron extended for one more season, the Bruins have nine contracts ending after this coming season. The most notable being forward David Pastrnak who will be looking for a raise. As well as goaltender Jeremy Swayman who will be exiting his entry level contract. It will be interesting to see how this offseason plays out now that Bergeron is reportedly returning as the Bruins hope to remain competitive.
