BREAKING NEWS: The Red Sox Have Designated Pablo Sandoval for Assignment

The day has finally arrived, Pablo Sandoval has been designated for assignment by the Red Sox. It was only a matter of time before the Sox cut ties with Sandoval. A release is expected to happen after he is officially DFA’d.

As you can see above, his final stat line is extremely underwhelming. When he signed his 5-year $95M contract in 2014, he was coming off his third World Series, and a historic performance in the post-season. A lot of people expected him to come into Boston and perform pretty well, but that just wasn’t the case. He took a major step down in year one of his contract, after posting a strong final season with the Giants. Year two consisted of just seven plate appearances before it was announced that he’d be heading to the DL with a season ending shoulder surgery. And before he returned this year, he was all over social media trying to get the fans on his side. He was posting about other Boston sports teams, and even uploading videos of him working out. It actually appeared that he was in way better shape than he had been during his first two years in Boston. However, he still sucked. It was just never a good match. This is probably going to go down as the worst contract the Red Sox have signed, and maybe even one of the worst contracts ever. The Sox still owe him around $48M, which is the 2 highest amount of dead money in MLB history.
