Boston Red Sox: Ready to Become the “Nasty Boys” of the Summer?

What a difference a year has made for Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox. Boston was abysmal last season, the pandemic shortened season. The club finished in last place with a 24-36 record.

Fast forward one year later, the Boston Red Sox have sole possession of first place in the American League East. They have the best record in the American League with a 49-31 record.

On Monday night, the Red Sox won their fifth straight game defeating the Royals, 7-6. It was the clubs 27th comeback win of the season. Alex Cora has been a difference maker in the clubhouse with the team. It’s evident that the Red Sox players love playing for Cora.

Nasty Boy

The Red Sox have been a fun team to watch this season and thanks to NESN commenter Dave O’Brien they might have a new moniker to go along with the season.

Closer Matt Barnes came in for the ninth during Tuesday nights game. The Red Sox closer was looking for his 18th save on the season. Barnes would close the door on the Royals and O’Brien would make a comment that Red Sox fans can never un-hear.

“Matt Barnes is a nasty boy!” O’Brien exclaimed after the final out. “He strikes out the side, and the Red Sox win it.”

The odd final call by O’Brien has been a hot topic by fans on social media and on sports radio. Even though O’Brien referred to Barnes as a “nasty boy”, it could be a moniker the team could take on as a whole.

Dave O’Brien’s Biggest Red Sox Call

O’Brien has taken massive criticism since the Red Sox replaced him with fan favorite Don Orsillo.

While calling games for the Red Sox, O’Brien has one huge call from the booth. He can thank Red Sox legend David Ortiz for that. The veteran play-by-play analyst would make a huge call during the Red Sox and Tigers playoff series back in 2013.

Ortiz would deposit a Joaquin Benoit 2-0 pitch into the bullpen for a game tying grand slam.

Here’s the call from O’Brien:

“The big right-hander, Benoit, delivers. Swing and a high deep drive into right field, that one scalded to right, Hunter on the move, racing back, it’s over his head, it’s gone, it’s into the bullpen, this game is tied. This game is tied! David Ortiz, David Ortiz, David Ortiz!”

O’Brien can now add the “Matt Barnes is a nasty boy!” as his second greatest call during his Red Sox tenure.

The “Nasty Boy” Barnes has now converted 18-of-21 saves for Boston and is having a career year. In 34 games the free agent to be has a 2.65 ERA and 57 strikeouts.

The Red Sox Have More Work To Do

As the season continues, the Red Sox still have more work to do. Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has acknowledged the winning but isn’t celebrating anything yet.

“We haven’t accomplished anything yet, but winning beats the heck out of losing, and to be where we are right now, and to have gotten there the way we have gotten there — in front of a full Fenway again — is a great feeling,” said Bloom.

The Red Sox have been a fun to watch all season. The interest in the Red Sox has been sky high and the more they win, the more people will be interested. O’Brien helped keep the interest with his nasty call on Tuesday.
