Boston Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer goes yard for the third time this season

New Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer has been tearing the cover off the baseball for the FCL Red Sox. The 18-year-old hit his third home run of the season on Thursday. 

Mayer’s home run came in the top of the fifth inning and gave the FCL Red Sox a 9-2 lead over FCL Orioles Black. The young shortstop went 2-for-4 in the game upping his batting average to .309 on the season. He also has 17 hits, two doubles, a triple and 13 RBIs in 65 plate appearances.

Mayer mashed 14 homers and batted .392 (38-for-97) in 34 games for Eastlake High this past spring. Mayer has never considered himself a power hitter while growing up but focused more on becoming a pure hitter. “For me personally, I didn’t have much power (growing up),” he said. 

According to SoxProspects, Mayer is “strong for his frame with good extension in his swing, and has already shown the ability to drive the ball in the air to all fields.” 

Mayer has now three straight multiple-hit games with the FCL Red Sox this season.
