Boston Red Sox: Nathan Eovaldi fails to pitch like an ace in series opener versus the Yankees

The Red Sox needed Nathan Eovaldi to pitch like an ace against the New York Yankees on Friday night. Instead the right-hander was tattooed for seven earned runs against the Bronx Bombers over 2 2/3 innings. Eovaldi’s start on Friday night from Fenway Park was arguably his worst start of the season.

The Yankees opened the first inning collecting four hits and scoring three runs off Eovaldi. Following the first inning, Eovaldi settled down slightly retiring the Yankees in ordered. The third inning on the other hand was a completely different story.

Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton broke the game wide open with a three-run home run. Stanton’s home run was his 32nd of the season and he increased his RBI total to 86 in the process.

This was the second time this season that Eovaldi gave up seven earned runs. He also was tagged for seven runs against the Blue Jays back on Aug. 6th, where he only went 4 2/3 innings.

Boston welcomed the Yankees to Fenway Park on Friday night leading the American Wild Card by two games. A sweep by the Red Sox would make the Yankees chances to enter the postseason bleak. Instead the Yankees came out swinging and received an ace-like performance from Gerrit Cole.

The Yankees ace pitched like a big-game pitcher versus Boston on Friday. Cole gave up three runs over six strong innings while working with a lead all night. The Yanks ace didn’t surrender his first hit of the game until the fourth inning.

“He’s a great pitcher, he’s our ace, he’s our horse,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “For him to go out and set the tone for us, especially after the offense put up a three-spot there in the first inning, I thought he did a great job of avoiding those momentum innings.”

Should the Red Sox start Eovaldi in Wild Card game?

Eovaldi will look to put this putrid start behind him and focus on rebounding in his final start of the regular season. If the Sox can lock up the top Wild Card spot sooner manager Alex Cora can plan his potential rotation heading into the postseason.

Red Sox fans have been wondering who will start the one-game Wild Card playoff game, either Chris Sale or Eovaldi. However, if the Sox are still fighting for a spot in October, Cora may need to us Sale and Eovaldi just to get into the one-game playoff.

The Red Sox should not be putting the cart before the horse and thinking of the Wild Card game. Boston still has their hands full with this dangerous Yankees team this weekend at Fenway Park.
