Boston Red Sox: Kyle Schwarber expected to start at first base on Thursday, making a impact since joining the club

Since joining the Red Sox off the injured list, Kyle Schwarber has been making an impact for Boston.

Schwarber has gotten off to a hot start at the plate with Boston. The slugger is hitting .379 with a homer, three doubles and eight walks. The former National made his official debut with the Sox on Aug. 13 following a stint on the injured list.

Schwarber has reached base in all nine games with the Sox. On Wednesday night against the Twins, he hit his first Red Sox home run.

During the bottom of the ninth, the Sox trailed by two runs to the Twins. Schwarber would smash a two-run bomb to centerfield off Twins closer Alex Colomé.

At the time of the home run, the Sox crawled back from a 4-0 deficit. Unfortunately, Hansel Robles wasn’t able to do his job in extras and surrendered five earned runs in the 10th inning.

Thursday will mark Schwarber’s first start at first base for the Sox. He has also played two games for the club in left field and the rest have been spent at designated hitter.

“I’m excited and ready for the challenge,” Schwarber said. “I feel like the work we’ve been putting in has been pretty good.”

This will be Schwarber’s first career start at first base. “What happens, happens and whenever I get in there I’m going to give it everything I got. I want to make the play for that guy on the mound, and the team, and just go from there and see what happen,” said Schwarber.

Due to Bobby Dalbec’s inconsistent play, Schwarber will get this opportunity at first.

“It’s been a struggle,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “He’s been inconsistent. … Even from his days in college, he was a good defensive player at third base. I thought the transition was going to be a lot better than we have seen,” said Cora.

The Red Sox will have Chris Sale on the mound Thursday night. He will be looking for his third win in a row since returning from Tommy John surgery.
