Boston Red Sox: It’s Time to Upgrade First Base with Anthony Rizzo

The Major League Baseball trade deadline is in 10 days and Chaim Bloom should be upgrading his team’s roster. One area the Red Sox need to address is first base due to Bobby Dalbec struggling at the plate this season. So could the Red Sox make a move for somebody such as Anthony Rizzo?

Dalbec has been Boston’s primary first base option but he’s struggled to consistently put together at-bats. The 26-year-old slugger has a .216 batting average with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs. Dalbec’s slash line has been putrid as well, he’s slashing .259/.400/.659. Needless to say, the Red Sox can find a better offensive upgrade while sending Dalbec to Worcester to work on his swing.

The Red Sox have been connected to some names on the trade market like Cubs Anthony Rizzo, Marlins Jesús Aguilar and Garrett Cooper.

The fan choice of the three names mentioned above is the Cubs’ Rizzo. The former Red Sox prospect would be an upgrade over Dalbec offensively. Rizzo is hitting .249 with 11 home runs and 34 RBIs.

The addition of Rizzo would give the Red Sox a left-handed hitting first baseman that could hit from the sixth spot in the order. Rizzo could also offer the Red Sox an option out of the second spot of the lineup especially if Verdugo continues to struggle.

Upgrades are Needed

Bloom is in a tough position because the Red Sox need to make upgrades. He also wants to maintain the focus for long-term sustainability.

The Red Sox are running out of internal options to play first base. Dalbec has struggled, Danny Santana is not the answer for this season, Christian Arroyo got hurt in his only game playing first and Franchy Cordero has played the position at Worcester.

Rizzo feels like the obvious choice for Bloom and the Red Sox.

The Cubs veteran first baseman is a free agent at the end of the season. The Red Sox do not have to commit long term to Rizzo and can stick with Dalbec for 2022. The Red Sox also have Triston Casas who is the club’s top prospect waiting in the wings. However, he is not an option for Boston this season.

Rizzo loves playing in Chicago and has stated he’s open to staying with the club beyond this season.

“I’m here in Chicago and I love it here, as I’ve expressed always, but I just don’t see any reason for us to listen,” said Rizzo. “Obviously, if they call, we’re not going to be selfish and stubborn. But my mindset is just, ‘play baseball.’”

Conclusion

Anthony Rizzo will focus on playing baseball while Bloom should be focused on bringing the veteran to the Red Sox for their postseason push. Bloom should trade for Rizzo and then turn his attention to acquiring another starting pitcher.
