Not too long after Tremont Waters was named the G League Rookie of the Year, Bleacher Report released an article ranking the top 15 G League prospects with NBA potential. Bleacher Report’s Jonathon Wasserman ranks Waters as the fourth-best G League prospect that has the most long-term potential.
The 5’10” guard put on quite a show in the G League this year. In 36 games for the Maine Red Claws, Waters averaged 18 points, 7.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game. Waters also shot 35% from three during his season in Maine. Between his scoring and playmaking abilities on offense and his tenacity on the defensive end, there’s no surprise he’s viewed as a top prospect in the G League.
Danny Ainge got an absolute steal by taking Waters with the 51st pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Not many teams expected Waters to have blown up like he did due to his size. But Boston seems to have no problems when it comes to smaller point guards.
“Teams missed on Waters by putting too much stock into his measurables and NCAA inefficiency,” Wasserman said. “He clearly possesses a level of quickness and skill to create, make plays and knock down jumpers at a threatening-enough clip.”
In my opinion, I believe Tremont Waters should be getting quality minutes off the Celtics’ bench next season. He could even become the backup point guard. Wasserman also sees Waters as being a potential backup point guard on a title contender.
“While his lack of size (5’10”, 175 lbs) and athleticism may limit his NBA ceiling, there is a path for Waters to emerge as a valuable backup on a title contender.”
Only time will tell what the future will hold for Tremont Waters in Boston. Danny Ainge loves the 22-year-old from New Haven, Connecticut. He should be in line to receive an NBA contract as early as next season.

Waters proved this season that he’s too good for the G League. It would be great if Waters got the call up to play for Boston during their time in Orlando. Spending time with the roster, and even playing some playoff minutes, can do wonders for his development.
Regardless, Boston fans should expect to hear more and more from Tremont Waters in the years to come.
