3 Players To Watch This Season For The Buccaneers

Is a Repeat in the Air?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming into the 21-22 season in a far different situation than years past. Not only did they make the playoffs for the first time since 2007 and won their first playoff game since 2002, they went all they way and won the Super Bowl. There was hope for change once the Bucs announced the signing of Tom Brady, and boy was there change. Now they enter the season with a big target on their back. Everyone is familiar with the big name stars like Brady, Mike Evans and Lavonte David, so I wanted to take a look at some other players who can make big impacts in the quest for back to back titles.

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka was the Buccaneers First Round draft pick in 2021. Coming out of the University of Washington, Tryon-Shoyinka is a physical freak . Standing at 6 foot 5, 260 pounds, the Edge rusher ran a outstanding 4.6 40 yard dash with a 35 inch vertical leap. Those kind of number jump off the page, and an athlete with his ability would have gone much higher than 32nd overall had he not opted out of the 2021 season due to covid-19. The Bucs already have some stars ahead of him in Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaq Barrett. Look for Tryon-Shoyinka to be the 3rd edge rusher getting reps on each side, and look for him to increase his snap count as the season goes along, creating plenty of opportunities to cause havoc in the backfield.

Antoine Winfield Jr.

Coming into the 2020 NFL Draft, my ideal start was for the Buccaneers to draft Tristan Wirfs or Jedrick Wills with their first pick, but more importantly Antoine Winfield Jr. with their second selection. Things could not have gone any better, as all went to plan and they got Wirfs and Winfield Jr. For the longest time, the glaring weakness on defense has been the safety position. Since John Lynch left, they have trotted out bum after bum at the position, and year after year the secondary gave up huge play game in and game out. That all changed last season, as Winfield Jr. stacked up impressive numbers, totaling 94 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and an interception. Had it not been for phenom Chase Young of the WFT, Winfield may have won the DROY. Look for another step towards stardom this season for Winfield Jr.

Scotty Miller

Scotty Miller is an interesting piece in the Buccaneers offense full of big time play makers. If healthy, guys like Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown and Gronk are going to get a majority of the targets. But don’t sleep on Miller, especially his speed. Miller uses his speed to be a threat on the deep ball. During the regular season, Miller averaged 15 yards per catch. In the playoffs, he boosted his production to 20 yards per catch. Look for Brady to take 2-3 deep shots a game to Miller, and with his 4.3 0 time, look for Scotty to catch his fair share.
