2020 Wimbledon Tournament Cancelled for first time since WORLD WAR II
Officials from the All England Lawn Tennis Club announced on Wednesday that Wimbledon has been cancelled for this year. They considered postponing the Championships; however, due to weather concerns for later in the summer, they saw it best to cancel. Tennis stars around the world have expressed their feelings on social media about the cancellation.

The cancellation marks the first time it will not be played since World War II. In addition, it could also mean that Federer and the Williams sisters have played their final match at Wimbledon. Federer is the all-time winningest Gentlemen’s player at Wimbledon, while Serena Williams has the most major titles of anyone in the open era (23 titles). This could signal the end of three legendary tennis careers.
The French Open
Unlike Wimbledon, the French Open has decided to postpone their tournament. The starting date is now September 20, 2020. This decision is highly controversial in the tennis world. Club officials failed to discuss the matter with the proper parties, including the players. The starting date is only one week after the end of the US Open in New York. This means that players must transition from a very hard playing surface to clay in a very short amount of time.
Also, Rafael Nadal, who holds the record for most French Open titles (12), has threatened to skip the tournament this year because of the delay. Nadal participates in an exhibition competition, along with Federer, during that time of the year. Missing two of the games top players, would be a major blow for the French Open.
In Conclusion
We all know this virus is extremely serious. However, to cancel a tournament that has not been cancelled since WORLD WAR II brings it to a whole other level for me. We all miss sports, but until this situation is under control, there will be no sports. Take care of yourself friends, and make sure to wash your hands.
