The Boston Bruins have had the same issue for years now, they’ve needed a second line right wing and have failed to address the issue. Every season since Lucic’s departure Krejci has had to deal with a pieced togehter line and almost always its been a slightly above average player being placed on his line. This year’s solution has been Brett Richie and guess what? The guy who has never had a season with more than 24 points is not performing. Couldn’t have seen that coming. So now the Bruins have to look outward to fix their issue again.
Ilya Kovalchuk’s name has come around as he was just released from the Kings and the Bruins were interested in the veteran free agent when he returned to the NHL two years ago. Since his return Kovalchuk has been a solid player and would be the Bruins best option at right wing, for now. Kovalchuk over the past two seasons has played in 81 games and posted 43 points. Kovalchuk becomes an interesting option because if he were to sign for veteran’s minumum of 700K for one year then it would be a good signing. If the Bruins were healthy at RW and they had Kuhlman or Senyshen available I don’t think Kovalchuk would make sense right now but with both of those guys hurt Kovalchuk would get a chance for second line minutes and if he’s only on a minimum deal it wouldn’t hurt if it didn’t work out.
The Bruins are back in action tonight and it looks as if Heinen will get another chance on Krejci’s right wing. The Bruins certainly aren’t in a rush to make a signing but if they are looking for a cheap option Kovalchuk is on the table and it is reported he wants to go to a contender. Kovalchuk may not be the answer but he is a winger capable of scoring and did succeed when he received top line minutes in LA. He might be old but he’s at least worth a flyer especially since the Bruins have tried nearly everybody on right wing and had little success.
