Will Malik Henry get a Second Chance
Netflix’s “Last Chance U” is a series following Community College football teams that have a lot of former DI college football athletes on their rosters. The reason it’s called Last Chance U is that, these players are troubled and got kicked off of their teams for a variety of reasons. Giving them a second chance to commit to a four year university. The Third season follows Independent Community College in rural Kansas. It’s star quarterback Malik Henry the top dual threat QB in the class of 2016 is a five star recruit that didn’t make it a year at Florida State University, got kicked off the team for violating team rules according to former coach Jimbo Fisher. During the show, Malik is painted as a fiery quarterback who shows a competitive character but sometimes it gets out of hand. The show really penetrates this theme and gives Malik a bad wrap. He clearly does go over the top on his coaches multiple times if he doesn’t like the play call, he will let coach Brown know.
This kid Malik has all the talent in the world, and is plenty good enough to play on Sundays but first he’s got to mature, he’s only just turned 20 and he’s a ’98 birthday. In the show, he struggles to go to class on time as his quarterback coach Frank Diaz was in charge of disciplining him and making sure he gets to class on time. Coach Brown yells at the assistant coaches plenty of times, making sure all of their players get to class on time.
At the end of the season, it shows what players got offers to play elsewhere next year and many of them are attending big name schools this fall to play ball, but Malik is still undecided and will not return to Independence for a second season. I really think he can play at a power 5 school again with his talent but he just needs to hone that energy into something positive and not direct it at his coaches. It will be interesting to see where he ends up as i believe Arizona State and UCLA have shown beginning level interest in him.
