Who Would Represent Each Team in a New Backyard Baseball?: National League West
Today, we are continuing our journey of finding the representative from each team in a new version of Backyard Baseball. We reach the conclusion of the National League today by profiling the National League West. So far, we have covered the National League East and the National League Central. The National League West is one of the most exciting divisions in all of baseball. Some of the games most exciting players call this division home. But who would receive the honor of representing their squad in Backyard Baseball.
Arizona Diamondback – Ketel Marte
The Diamondbacks don’t have many contenders for the their representative. If they never traded Paul Goldschmidt or Zack Greinke a few seasons ago, the choice would be obvious. However, I am going with their best all around position player in Ketel Marte. Marte has been sidelined for most of this season, but he was off to a hot start. He had a breakout year in 2019 when he hit 32 home runs and drove 92 runs.
Colorado Rockies – Trevor Story
This one is obvious. With Nolan Arenado now in St. Louis, Trevor Story is *for now* the face of the Rockies franchise. This will be Story’s last season in Colorado as he is headed to free agency after this season. However, there is a high likelihood he is traded before that happens. Story is one of the top shortstops in the game today. He provides an excellent bat, can flash the leather, and is a burner on the base paths.
L.A. Dodgers – Mookie Betts
The Dodgers are one of those teams that it would be hard to choose the wrong guy. They have Cody Bellinger, Clayton Kershaw, Corey Seager, and many other players that would be deserving. However, Mookie Betts is in the top 5 of best players in all of baseball. Like Trevor Story, Betts offers the rare combination of being a true five-tool player. An outfield consisting of Betts and Brewers representative, Christian Yelich, would be tough to beat.
San Francisco Giants – Buster Posey
Here I believe is another fairly obvious choice. Posey joins Freddie Freeman, Joey Votto, and Yadier Molina as the one-team for a career representatives. Posey is having a decent year in 2021 after opting out of the 2020 season. He is a 3-time World Series champion, a rookie of the year, and won an MVP award. Posey should join Barry Bonds as players to represent the Giants in Backyard Baseball.
San Diego Padres – Fernando Tatis Jr.
The new face of Major League Baseball is the representative for the San Diego Padres. Fernando Tatis Jr. and his very rich contract find themselves as cartoon kids now. Tatis is one of the most exciting players in all of baseball and needs to be in this game (and perhaps the cover athlete. He makes the game so enjoyable to watch that non-baseball fans are intrigued by his play. He is helping the game grow with people of all ages and that ambassadorship needs to be represented.
That concludes the National League portion of our series. Next week, we will start in the American League East and work our way west bound. We have 15 representatives chosen and still have 15 to go.
