Which team will Filip Forsberg end with this season
Filip Forsberg’s Future?
Filip Forsberg is one of the most exciting players in the NHL and has spent the last ten seasons with the Nashville Predators. Forsberg’s contract ends by the end of the season and teams around the league are keeping a close eye on how the Predators look this season whether they would like to move him by the trade deadline. Many teams called about him this past season and off-season as well and the Predators weren’t budging, so as a Preds fan, that gives you some hope that David Poile will find a way to re-sign him. The Predators just recently signed defenseman Mattias Ekholm to a four-year, $25 million contract and now the focus is re-signing Forsberg. If the team decides to move on from Forsberg, here are some teams that I think will give a call and try to land the forward.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto was one of the teams last year that called in about Forsberg. The Leafs are one of the league’s best team’s that are ready to win the Stanley Cup and adding a player like Forsberg could help them out. The team have some good young talent like defenseman Timothy Liljegren and Winger Nick Robertson and they also have the draft capital to add picks with the trade.
Edmonton Oilers
How electric would it be to have Forsberg on the same line as McDavid and Draisaitl? You could make an argument that their line could be the best line in the league. The Oilers were at a low point in the early years on the 2010’s, but after a lot of great picks, the team is really solid now. The team has good young talent like defenseman Philip Broberg, Evan Bouchard, and forward Dylan Holloway and draft capital as well. I don’t think Edmonton makes the move, but if the Predators struggle and the Oilers want to add some firepower for the playoffs, the Oilers will love to add a player like Forsberg.
Detroit Red Wings
Here’s and interesting team to keep an eye on. Detroit has a lot on young guys on the team and would love to help Dylan Larkin out by adding another star player like Forsberg to the team. Detroit has the prospects and draft capital to make it happen and having Steve Yzerman as your General Manager, anything is possible. The trade would benefit both teams. The Predators get younger and the Red Wings add a star and adding scoring threat.
New York Rangers
Filip Forsberg to the big apple? This is definitely a possibility. If the the Rangers can’t land Jack Eichel, then Forsberg could be their consolation prize. The Rangers have some good prospects like defenseman Nils Lundkvist and forward Vitali Kravtsov and some picks as well. Adding Forsberg could help the Rangers push them into the playoffs and go on a Stanley Cup run.
Los Angeles Kings
Forsberg to La La land and reunite with his friend and former teammate Viktor Arvidsson? The Kings have argubaly the best farm system in the NHL at the moment, so if your going to want a stud prospect, the Kings are up there on the list. The Kings are going to be better than what most people think this year. They were not a great team last year, but adding players like Viktor Arvidsson and Phillip Danault have gave the team some firepower they needed. With Byfield being off limits, maybe the Predators can land Turcotte or Kaliyev. That would be huge move for both teams, but I would imagine that the Kings are happy with where they are and keep their prospects.
In Conclusion…
At the end of the day, I would love for the Predators to re-sign Forsberg, but it depends on the price. I think the max I’d give him would be $8 million a year, but if he wants more than that, then you need to trade him and not let him walk in free agency. I can’t see the team letting him walk, so I think it will depend on how the season goes, but with a lot of big contracts already on the team, it will be hard to sign long term. It will be interesting to see what David Poile does and many teams around the league will keep their eyes on this situation.
