It was reported that free-agent infielder Manny Machado would make his decision on where he will be playing in the foreseeable future after the beginning of the new year. Today is December 31st, so his new team may be known by the end of the week.
Based on his free-agent visits, Machado’s list comes down to the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Chicago White Sox.
I do not see the Phillies as a destination just because they traded for shortstop Jean Segura to start the offseason. It has been clear that Machado prefers to play shortstop as he pressed his old team (the Baltimore Orioles) to move him there despite playing Gold Glove defense at third base.
The White Sox don’t really seem like a fit to me either. The only way I think this happens is if Chicago pony’s up a lot of dough. If Machado signs here, I feel like it will be similar to the atmosphere he had in Baltimore, as they wait for guys to come up through their farm system.
Then we have the good ol’ evil empire. This is where he ends up. This is also just me speculating but I don’t see it going any other way. Machado likes New York, said if offers were close he’d go to New York, and the Yankees need infield help with Didi Gregorious on the shelf after Tommy John surgery. It makes too much sense for it not to happen, so (in my opinion) you should expect Machado in pinstripes to start the 2019 season.
