Red Sox Sign Carson Smith to Minor League Deal…But Who Honestly Cares?

The Red Sox have been searching for their 8th inning option for several seasons now. They had that in Joe Kelly (sort of) and he is now with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Adam Ottavino and David Robertson are still on the market, so what will the Red Sox do next? That’s right! They signed Carson Smith to a Minor League deal… wait, what?!

So the Red Sox re-signed Smith to a Minor League deal the other day and I for one am very perplexed by this. If you all remember, Carson Smith needed season ending shoulder surgery. Did he hurt it in a game or in a workout? Not quite. He hurt it SLAMMING HIS GLOVE in the dugout after a bad appearance. Not surprisingly, the Red Sox cut him in November.

To me, that makes the signing even stranger. Smith has appeared in 29 games for the Red Sox since the 2016 season when he was traded for left-handed pitcher Wade Miley. He has a 2.66 ERA which would be good if he was fully healthy in ANY of those seasons. However, I have a feeling that Smith has a good mindset heading into his rehab.

Obviously, Smith was being sarcastic with a fan who clearly doesn’t want him back in a Red Sox uniform. But let me ask you something Red Sox fans, do we really care that much if he’s kicking around in the Minors? I personally don’t.

It just seems inevitable that the Red Sox will sign Ottavino or Robertson to fill the 8th inning problem. Something in the gut tells me the Red Sox will wait for the market to dwindle down so they can re-sign Craig Kimbrel at their price and then get Ottavino or Robertson to fulfill their 8th inning need.

So Carson Smith, good luck on your journey back! Maybe, you’ll be able to find yourself again and be a contributor in the Red Sox bullpen come 2019. But until then, let’s not get distracted from the fact that the Red Sox won the World Series in 2018.

I hope you all have a Happy New Year and stay safe tonight! If you’re just hanging in and want to forget about why the Red Sox signed Carson Smith, here’s something you can do.
