What A Day It Was For Boston Sports Yesterday
Boston sports fans are spoiled. They really are! (myself included)
Yesterday, we had three Boston teams participating in some sort of big game and they all came away victorious. For anyone who might not have been paying attention all day, I will gladly get you all caught up on what you missed.
The Bruins Beat the Washington Capitals for the First Time in 15 Games!
The Boston Bruins went into yesterday’s tilt at Capital One Arena against the Washington Capitals haven’t beating the Caps in 15 games. That dates back to 2014 for those wondering! But yesterday, all of the stars aligned for the city of Boston, starting with the Bruins.
The game was scoreless through the first period. In the second, the Bruins were able to take the lead for good as David Krejci put home a wrist shot that beat the right pad of Braden Holtby.
That would be the only tally of the game as the Bruins were able to shutout the Capitals 1-0 on the road. Tuukka Rask was the star of this one as he stopped all 24 shots that came his way. Oh, and he also became the winningest goalie in Bruins history after recording his 253rd win with the black and gold.
If you want to take a look at his highlights from yesterday, here you go!
So far: Boston 1 opponents 0.
The Celtics Outlast the Oklahoma City Thunder 134-129 and Move Up to 3rd in the Eastern Conference
In the second game of the day, the Boston Celtics rode a three game winning streak before they took on the Oklahoma City Thunder, who was riding a seven game win streak of their own. It looked like the Celtics would win this one with some ease. But then again, it’s the Celtics, so that doesn’t happen often!
It wasn’t easy, but the Celtics finally came away with the 134-129 victory to improve their winning streak to 4 games.
Do you want a surprise? Okay, here it is. Kyrie Irving went off again! Irving led the Celtics with 30 points and 11 assists, including a clutch finger roll to put the Celtics up 4 late.
Everyone talks about the Celtics defense, but it was their offense that stole the show. (Obviously!) The Celtics had 8 guys scoring in double digits, which made Brad Stevens happy.
The Celtics got a key turnover on defense, however, when Al Horford stole the ball from Russell Westbrook within the final moments of the game to pretty much seal the deal. The Celtics will hopefully continue their winning streak on Tuesday night as they are in Cleveland to take on the struggling Cavaliers.
Boston 2, opponents 0.
The Patriots Beat the Los Angeles Rams to Win Super Bowl LIII
Before I get into my analysis on the Patriots 6th Super Bowl title win last night, I want to make a disclaimer. I thought the game last night STUNK! Granted yes, I am happy the Patriots are Super Bowl champions. But, to see the lack of offense on both sides of the ball was actually brutal. Viewership for this game must have been brutal as the game went on.
Some might have liked both defenses showing up.
Anyways, on to the actual game!
The Patriots and Rams both came in as two of the highest powered offenses in the league. The matchup headlines included experience vs. youth (Brady vs. Goff), how the Patriots offensive line would handle Suh and Donald, how involved would Todd Gurley be, etc. This game was a battle of the defenses as the game in total saw 16 points and one touchdown.
One bright spot for the Patriots was wide receiver Julian Edelman. He made up for missing last year’s Super Bowl in a big way as he had 10 catches for 141 yards to rightfully earn Super Bowl MVP.
This Looked to be Like All of the Other Patriots Super Bowls
We all thought it would be another grind this Super Bowl and we were all right. Brady threw a huge interception on the Patriots first drive of the game when it seemed like they would FINALLY score in the first quarter of a Super Bowl. Nope! Stephen Gostkowski booted a 42 yard field goal in the second quarter, after missing a field goal attempt in the first, to give the Patriots the only score of the half. The Rams tied it in the third with a field goal of their own until Sony Michel finally found the endzone.
The score put the Patriots up 10-3 in the fourth quarter. Jared Goff seemed to finally be leading the Rams down the field for a score. But when the pressure came in, Goff threw an interception which Stephon Gilmore caught with relative ease at the Patriots five yard line.
The Final Few Minutes
The Patriots then milked the clock and Stephen Gostkowski squeaked a 41 yard field goal through the left upright to put the Patriots up 13-3 and essentially winning the Super Bowl. The Rams drove down to try to kick a field goal and then miraculously recover an onside kick to try to pull off an almost impossible comeback. The kick sailed wide left and the Patriots took a knee until the clock struck triple zeroes.
Tom Brady was 21/35 with 262 yards, no TD passes and one interception. Sony Michel finished with 18 carries for 94 yards and a TD. Rob Gronkowski finished with 6 catches for 87 yards, including 2 catches on the touchdown drive to put the Patriots up 7 late.
It was the defense that won this Super Bowl for the Patriots. They held Jared Goff to only 229 passing yards and held the duo of C.J. Anderson and Todd Gurley to 57 total yards rushing on 17 carries. All of this led to the Patriots 6th Super Bowl title since the 2001 season.
Boston 3, opponents 0.
Boston sports team completed the trifecta yesterday. Like I said before, we are truly spoiled being Boston sports fans.
Get the duckboats ready for Tuesday and give me McGillicuddy!
One last thing for you New York fans too.
Boston truly is great in all of their sports!
