Week 9: Pats Squeak Out Win Against Jets…Meh

Week nine saw the New England Patriots head to New York to play the Jets with a 2-5 record. It’s been a weird year for us as New England Patriots fans. The team is very noticeably struggling. There wasn’t a win throughout the whole month of October. But now, the Patriots can finally put that losing streak to rest. Yes, the Patriots won! I know fellow CGS writer Diego Galvis is just as surprised as I am. The Patriots pulled out a 30-27 victory over the Jets to improve to 3-5 on the season.

Here’s a little recap of what you might have missed if you didn’t get a chance to see the game.

Cam Newton

Cam Newton looked a LOT better in this game against the Jets. Yes, I understand it’s the Jets. But it’s a starting point! He went 27-35 for 274 yards with passes like the one you see above to Jakobi Meyers. Newton got rid of the ball quickly and was accurate. Josh McDaniels mentioned he’d try something new with Cam Newton and we saw that in this game. Cam barely ran. Probably because they wanted to limit the turnovers. I can’t say I blame the Patriots there. Bottom line, if Cam can look like this and the Patriots limit the turnovers, they’ll be back to their former selves.

Jakobi Meyers and Damien Harris

Let’s start with Jakobi Meyers. Man, did he look like a legit NFL receiver Monday night. 12 catches for 169 yards? Yeah, that’s an extremely solid game all around. It’s evident that Cam Newton is gaining more confidence and chemistry with Meyers, as indicated by the last two weeks. Meyers definitely isn’t a number one receiver. But as a two or three option, I’m a huge fan of it going forward.

Now let’s get to Damien Harris. Another solid night for the second year back out of Alabama. 14 carries for 71 yards will be sufficient enough on any given day. The only concern is that Harris left the game with a chest injury. Hopefully, Harris is ready to go on a short week against the Ravens. They’ll need him, especially with Calais Campbell out for the Ravens. Harris continues to show why he is a solid option for the Patriots at RB for the future.

How Do We Feel?

Me personally, I’m always happy for a Patriots win in any given situation. I know it takes away from the potential #TankforTrevor sweepstakes. But it is what it is. My Legends Lingo co-host Thomas “Fiesta” Satham-Fisette was mad because at this point, maybe the Patriots should tank. I totally understand and get that. To Fiesta’s credit, maybe he’s right. As a fan though, you always like to see your teams perform well. So if you’re happy about the win, great! If you want to embrace the tank and have the Patriots tank, I understand that as well! It’s a weird position that the Patriots are in right now. One we aren’t accustomed to being in, so it makes sense!

In Conclusion

It was ugly, but it got the job done. But now, you have the Ravens at home on Sunday night football. I’m on record saying the Patriots lose 24-10. But if they SOMEHOW pull this game out, you might be right back in the hunt. You’ll be 4-5 going to Houston that has one win. Then you play an inconsistent Cardinals team at home and then at the Chargers where they can’t win in the final minutes. The schedule is in your favor. Stranger things have happened. We enjoyed a victory (Tuesday) for the first time in quite awhile. Now it’s time to get back to business and somehow get on a roll here. It’s a lot to ask, but that’s why you play the game.
