Washington Picks a New Team Name. . .Sort Of

It’s officially kind of official. The Washington Redskins have a new name: the Washington Football Team.

As Schefter notes, this is not the final renaming of the Redskins. The team will continue to search for a new moniker that fits what owner Daniel Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera find appropriate.

But at the same time, Washington will be ready to roll out the start of the 2020 season as the “Washington Football Team”.

Seriously? Could they really not come up with anything? Yes, I know that they may have some copyright issues regarding a new name, but Washington is a NFL franchise. There is no way they don’t have enough power and, or money to get what they want.

With that being said, to me this feels like a public relations move to get their name out of the news. I guess I can’t really say that with any certainty, but to me it seems obvious.

The most recent news surrounding Snyder and the team revolves around having an offensive name / mascot, and the sexual harassment of 15 women. So, instead of having that news continue to circulate, I assume Snyder and company just decided to throw out some nonsense to distract from their inexcusable actions.

I know that if I was an owner I wouldn’t be excited to trot out team no name when the season is almost two months away. There should be plenty of time to get the naming rights, as well as a new uniform concept. Like I said, they are the NFL, and the NFL is king.
