Last night was the last regular season game of the careers of many Hockey East seniors. For some, the game was about finishing their NCAA careers on a high note. For others, it was about deciding who rank at the top of their division. For UMass Lowell fans, there was cause for celebration before the game against the University of New Hampshire was even half over.
The River Hawks visited Durham, NH on Friday to play the Wildcats, wearing their third jerseys (that remind me of the Canadiens’ reverse retro, and I’m not mad about it). Lowell has been in the hunt for the top of Hockey East all season, while UNH has been closer to the bottom of the standings.
So it wasn’t a surprise when the River Hawks walked away from the game victorious in a 6-3 blowout. Andre Lee scored the opening goal not long into the game, then scored the fourth in the third period. He is tied for most points on the team at 26, but stands alone at most goals for UML with 16. Carl Berglund also made significant contributions with three assists; Brian Chambers had two.
It was UNH’s turn to drive as they visited the Tsongas Center last night. It was a much more controlled game from both teams. The only goal scored was in the second period. It was out of a scramble in front of the net and a nice rebound off UNH goaltender David Fessenden. Carl Berglund was the one to score with Brehdan Ebgum and Andre Lee credited with the first and second assists, respectively.
Lowell’s Owen Savory made his senior night extra memorable, as he stopped 23 shots for a shutout. It was his fifth this season and his 19th in regulation this season.
On to Playoffs
Last night’s win was important to the River Hawks as it gave them a bye for the first round of playoffs and gave them home ice for their first playoff game next Saturday. Who they play will depend on the outcome of Wednesday night.
More importantly for the fans, UMass Amherst lost to Boston College. Had UMass won, they would have clinched first in Hockey East.
The TD Garden hosts the Hockey East Championship every year, but this year they are also hosting the Frozen Four. I hope to see UMass Lowell take the ice at the Garden later this month for the HEA playoffs. And though they are ranked at 16 right now, I hope to see them at the Garden again in April for the Frozen Four.
