Bruins Jeremy Swayman named NHL Rookie of the month for February
Bruins’ rookie goaltender Jeremy Swayman was named the NHL’s February 2022 Rookie of the Month. The 23-year-old netminder posted a 5-1-1 record through the month with a monster stat line of .960 save percentage and 1.13 goals against throughout that stretch. This performance coming on the heels of Tuukka Rask’s retirement. The young goaltender has certainly stepped up and staked his claim on the Bruins net.
Bruins goaltending tales throughout the season
The Bruins net minding situation seems to have taken as many twists and turns as it possible could throughout the season. The season started with Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman splitting the schedule. Ullmark seemingly handling the stronger teams while the Bruins allowed Swayman to continue to build his confidence at the NHL level. When it was rumored that Tuukka Rask was returning, neither Ullmark nor Swayman had yet to run away with most of the starts. Swayman, less because of his performance and more because he is on a two-way contract, was returned to Providence to make room for Rask.
Is Swayman the bona fide number 1 starter?
Since his return to Boston, Swayman has started 9 out of the Bruins’ last 14 games. What’s even more impressive is the caliber of teams he has faced in his second stint with the team this season. Swayman has rattled off wins against Colorado, Pittsburg, Las Vegas and the New York Rangers during this stretch of brilliant play. Now, has he done enough to separate himself as the Bruins go-to guy? There’s still a lot of games remaining. While I believe Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy will rely on the hot hand when it comes to goaltending, Swayman is his guy right now. The numbers will certainly come back down; however, he has earned the bulk of the starts over Ullmark. The confidence and poise this young Bruins goaltender has exuded early in his NHL career shows a lot of promise that the Bruins have something here with Swayman.
