Top 10 Free Agents Still Available

The first week and a half of signings and trades has passed, and it was as action packed as ever. The Browns blew up on the first day with tons of moves, and the Patriots waited it out as always. The QB carousel has been spun and just about all the viable starters have found new homes. There are still plenty of unsigned players available, but it seems like the moves have started to die down. Here’s a look into the top 10 guys left that could make an impact on whatever team decides to take a chance on them.

10. Demarco Murray – RB: Murray had a very down season last year, and eventually lost his job. He definitely has plenty left in the tank, and in the right system could thrive like he did in his first season in Tennessee. He still has something to prove at 30. He might not be the kind of workhorse that will start 16 games for a team, but he could probably be servicable for at least 8, and be a good change of pace back for the other 8.

9. Pernell McPhee – OLB: So many teams can use a good edge rusher. McPhee can be that guy, but his only issue is staying healthy. He has proved that he can be a disruptive force when he needs to be, and could supplement a pass rush on many weak defenses.

8. Bennie Logan – DT: Used to be a number 2 to Fletcher Cox, he had big shoes to fill replacing Dontari Poe in KC. There are plenty of teams that were weak against the run and could use a mass like him in the middle. Plenty of teams also let their top DT walk, and could use a guy on a 1 year trial to replace them.

7. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie – CB: There are teams that have plenty of young talent in their defensive backfield, but might lack a veteran presence. DRC was very good for the Giants last year even on the other side of 30. He could be a good #2 corner or even convert to safety well and be a great 1 or 2 year asset to a young squad.

6. Navorro Bowman – ILB: After many injuries he was traded out of San Fran last year amidst a rebuild. He could be a great piece to a thriving team looking for a playoff run, but lacks a solid run stuffer in the middle. He may not stay healthy all the time, but if he is not an every down option he could be a huge tackler on early downs, and a great veteran presence.

5. Johnathan Hankins – DE/DT: Who wouldn’t want a 325 lb d-lineman that’s versatile enough to play end and tackle? He is a mean force that can not only stop the run but be an interior pass rushing asset as well. It seems like he just was not a great fit in Indianapolis and could be a much better player in another defense.

4. Kenny Vaccaro – S: Such a young and talented safety, he just seemed like he did not work out with the Saints. He is such a good all around safety. He can be a ball hawk, and come up and make some solid tackles in the run as well. There have been occasions that he has gotten beat, as well as some injury issues, but if coached correctly could be a top 10 safety in the league.

3. Eric Reid – S: A guy that makes people think twice about going across the middle, so many teams would love to have an “enforcer” like him in their secondary. Although it seems like a dying role due to rule changes, he doesn’t need to actually make illegal hits to make receivers get alligator arms when coming his way. His presence alone is a threat to get clocked. He is also a very good cover safety and plays the ball well in the air. Frankly I don’t really know why he has not already been signed. The only reason he is also above Vaccaro is because I feel like he has proved himself more in the league.

2. Bashaud Breeland – CB: I don’t know how he could have failed his physical in Carolina. With Butler and Johnson signed, he is easily the next best available CB on the market. He could be a number one on so many teams, and looked like one when he filled in for Josh Norman. There were times he looked better than Norman. He is a very aggressive corner and is fun to watch in one on one battles. I think he has been underrated and deserves a number one spot and a chance to thrive.

1. Ndamukong Suh – DT: The obvious number one still available, regardless of age he will almost always be a force. Not many interior offensive lineman are capable of stopping him, even in double teams. The only issue is always his on field conduct that he can never seem to control. He has met with a few teams, and many have been connected to him, but nobody has pulled the trigger yet. It will be interesting to see where he lands, and if any coach can keep him in line.
