To TPE Or Not To TPE

After an inconsistent and frustrating first half by the Boston Celtics it’s now decision time for the Celtics front office during this all star break. Danny Ainge’s front office has a big task ahead of them. After Gordon Hayward’s departure many thought the Celtics would still be good, but they have taken a minor step back and looks like they could be the 3,4, or 5 seed in the east this year. Which as of the night heading into the all star break they are at the 4th seed, but it stills unsatisfactory. Yes Tatum and Brown are having legit seasons, they are all stars and will be in the conversation for all nba, but it’s not about them it’s about what is around them and there are a lot of question marks.

There are legit questions. Kemba Walker in the last handful of games has played like all star Kemba. But can he keep it up and have his knee hold up? Time will tell on that. Will Pritchard and Timelord hit a wall? Both are playing a lot more minutes and games than ever before. Can they keep up the way that they are playing and we should expect some sort of slump at some point? When Smart gets back; who are they going to trust, especially when it comes to those remaining minutes in the rotation? Semi, Grant and Thompson have a lot to prove in the next couple weeks. Yes all three have been solid at points, but have been inconsistent more than not especially on the defensive end.

And the big final question: what are they going to do with that dang Hayward TPE? It’s a legit question to ask. I have talked to a few people on the subject. Some say you use as soon as you can, others say in the offseason, and a couple say don’t use at all and just accept the roster as is until Kemba off the books and have two max slots in the summer of 2023. All three scenarios have some risk of course. Using as soon as possible may cause them to miss a certain target especially with Celtics wanting to find “shooting with size”. While waiting for the summer gives the TPE there will be potential more options, but also more suitors and just waiting until max slots become available is another risk scenario especially with Kemba on the roster.

From my viewpoint they should and will use it either at the deadline or this summer. Preferably at deadline because the outlook of this team could look different in 2021-2022. Theis is presumably gone this summer. Smart is heading into the final year of his deal next season. There’s also the potential of Kemba being moved this summer or opting out following summer. There is a potential need of adding not only to be better this year, but to still be good while other pieces potentially leave.  The clock is ticking and pressure will only mount in the weeks ahead.
