The Saints Were Exposed, Sets Up an Interesting NFC Playoff Race

The New Orleans Saints were not the team we all expected to see on Thursday night when taking on the Dallas Cowboys. Drew Brees is an MVP candidate and he was absolutely not that Thursday night. He only had 127 yards passing, one touchdown pass, and one interception. That interception came with a little over two minutes to go in the game causing his team to fall to 10-2. With that lost, the playoff picture could look a lot different by the time the regular season ends.

Los Angeles Rams are now the top team in the NFC pending the results on Sunday. They are taking on a very mediocre team in the Detroit Lions who have been very inconsistent all year long.  However, the team that I believe really benefits from this lost by the Saints is the Chicago Bears. The Bears are currently 8-3 and are traveling to New York Sunday to take on the New York Giants, who currently have a top five draft picks in the upcoming draft. The Bears have shown that they are a legit contender in NFC. Their defense has proven that they can take over games and put their offense in a good position to score. If everything falls into place, the Bears have the potential of a first-round bye and maybe even the top seed in the NFC.

The Rams and Bears will be facing off in a Sunday night match up in the last quarter of the season which could benefit the Saints. That game can determine who gets a first-round bye in the playoffs. The Saints, however, have a somewhat tough schedule the rest of the way. Although they have to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, only four wins this year, they did defeat the Saints this season. Then they still need to take on the Carolina Panthers twice, a team fighting for their playoff lives. They also have to play the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the top teams in the AFC.  Both the Rams and Bears have winnable games against teams who are under 500. If those games are won, that can give both teams a first-round bye in the playoffs causing the Saints to play on wild card weekend.

Now I’m not saying the Saints are going to lose out but with that lost Thursday night, it really does set up an exciting finish to the regular season. A team that was considered one of the best teams in the NFL, if not the best team, could end up playing wild card weekend. With a thirty-nine-year-old quarterback, it would be very ideal for the Saints to give Drew Brees an extra week of rest in order for him to perform at a high level throughout the playoffs. If not, I feel this could really diminish the chances of the Saints getting to the Super Bowl. I think the Rams will end up with the number one seed and the playoffs go through the Coliseum. Then my hot take is that the Bears finish with the second seed and the Saints fall to the three-seed causing them to play wild card weekend. It’s going to be an interesting ending to the 2018 regular season in the NFC.
