The Rafters Pod Ep. 86: Boston Bol

The first move has been made! Brad Stevens from his front office position trades Juancho Hernangomez to Denver for Bol Bol and PJ Dozier. Both guys come to Boston injured but can Dozier and Bol stick around and help Boston contribute down the road?

Juancho Hernangomez has been a trade target for most of the season commanding a far greater salary than his play warrants. If this team had any hope to improve they needed his money off the books. Enter Denver. Brad pulls off a deal that has many layers to it so Justin and Liam dissect this trade and disclose what this means for Boston down the line. Both Dozier and Bol Bol are likely to miss the rest of the season with a slight possibility Bol comes back in April. Why would the Celtics make a move for two guys who won’t play? It is all about the money. This deal frees up money down the line for another move to be made. Both newcomers are on expiring deals and can leave this season without penalty.

If they do resign in Boston though, Liam believes both players could have strong roles for this team. Bol Bol in particular is a phenomenal athlete standing at 7 foot 2 inches with a guards skill-set.  unfortunately, with great attributes comes great drawback. Guys of Bol Bol’s height struggle with longevity in a sport that demands so much on the body.

A trade like this is a window into what a front office is thinking about the team. Now that Boston has freed up space, will they make a move to contend this year or ride out another disappointing year and play the long-term improvement game? Another trade is imminent. Will we see the blockbuster trade many fans want to see?
