The NHL Should Go Back To Home Teams Wearing White Sweaters

We’re stuck in the dog days of summer, which typically means there isn’t much news around the NHL. In a few weeks we’ll be talking about prospect tournaments, training camp, and pre-season games, but for now I want to talk about something a bit different. I want to talk about the NHL sweater policy. I don’t fully know the rule on this situation, but I’m sick of teams wearing their colored jersey’s at home and white jersey’s on the road. The NHL needs to go back to home teams in white and road teams in their colored look.

I remember growing up and going to the TD Garden (it was the Fleet Center at the time) and seeing the Bruins wearing their home whites. It was such a classic look. And the better part about it was I got to see the road team’s colored look. I got to see the red of the Montreal Canadiens, the blue of the New York Rangers, and the orange of the Philadelphia Flyers. It was cool to see the colored look and design of the opposing teams jersey.

Every team in the NHL has a white jersey, but not every team in the NHL has a blue jersey. Or a black jersey. Or a green jersey. Teams have different colors, which makes their current home jersey different from every other team. But why aren’t those worn as a road jersey?

I find myself at about 15–20 Bruins games a year and it’s the same scene every time. I see a team in black sweaters play a team in white sweaters. How about we change that up? Why can’t I see the Bruins play in their white sweaters and the road teams playing in their varying color looks?

Maybe I’m just being a baby. Maybe the hockey sweater aficionado in me is popping out. Maybe I’m just bored out of my mind that the NHL is so far away. I don’t know. But what I do know is that I’m ready for the NHL to go back to making teams wear white at home and colors on the road.
