The NHL All-Star weekend could be interesting this year
NHL All-Star weekend is upon us. This year’s event will be hosted in Las Vegas at T-Mobile arena with some events taking place outside. A weekend often catered towards the younger NHL audience may gain interest from others thanks to the Vegas adaptation.
All-Star Skills competition gets a Las Vegas Spin
There are a lot of recognizable events in the skills competition from years prior: fastest skater and hardest shot. One prior event that is making its triumphant return is the Breakaway Challenge- with a twist. The main objective or theme of the event is “trick shot” with names such as Anaheim Ducks’ rookie phenom Trevor Zegras participating. One brand new event for this year is an accuracy shooting contest based off the card game Blackjack. Players will attempt to shoot at oversized cards with face values and win the game of Blackjack. The winner of two rounds will be deemed the “Puck Shark”. Another event involves eight players traveling by boat to the Fountains at the Bellagio and hitting targets within the fountain from the boat.
NHL All-Star snubs
A lot of focus this year has been on the players who didn’t make the All-Star cut. The NHL over the past several years has put an emphasis on all teams being represented. Even at the expense of All-Star caliber seasons from other players. A few players that stand out the most as ultimately snubbed are Bruins forward Brad Marchand, Penguins forward Sidney Crosby and Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin. The NHL needs to figure out a way to both recognize All-Star caliber players while also representing all 32 Teams going forward. A solution may be right in front of them with the incorporation of Ducks forward Trevor Zegras participating as a non-All-Star in the trick shot competition.
