The Next Last Dance

The finale of Jason Hehir’s The Last Dance docuseries aired Sunday night and it got me thinking (dangerous, I know).

What would work as the next, great, sports docuseries of a similar style?

Few, if any, could ever match the sports greatness and cultural impact captured in this documentary about His Airness, to be sure.

The docuseries made The Tiger King look more like the Kitten Jester (that felt good for me even if you hated reading that). Besides its stellar ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, the way The Last Dance captivated and captured audiences will be tough to repeat and surely secure many awards. Michael Jordan needs even more awards.

However, if we can get another docuseries of such quality, there are a few stories of dynasties and dynastic players that could be told. Here are a few that have a mix of dominant and interesting person, with some dominant teams.

Transcendent Player and Dynasty

First and foremost are some obvious sports dynasties/dynastic players that could match Jordan’s bulls.

What made The Last Dance so fascinating was the combination of a great dynasty and it’s leading man. To reach that level of fascination, you need a bit of both.

These would be the contenders for a docuseries of the Last Dance ilk.

GOAT Brady and the Patriots

No player and team could have a docuseries as compelling as the Pats, to me. The Ups and Downs (but stayed up enough to retain relevance for 20 years) were remarkable. From the magic of 01, and dominance from 03 to 04, the 07 season, spygate, deflategate etc. What a wealth of content to pull from! The NFL is usually very protective of The Shield, but maybe they can ease up a bit to allow some real good stuff to come out of this?

I want to see backroom fights between Tom and Bill, I want to see hidden Gronk shenanigans, I want to see Ty Law on my screen with Milloy and Seymor. Tedy Bruschi doing is thing and Vrabel catching passes. NFL films could really make this something special.

Timmy Duncan and the Spurs

Here we have the best power forward of all time, one of the best coaches all time, and a consistent winning team.

None of the Spurs teams reached the peak that Jordan’s Bulls did, but this is the closest recent dynasty to the Bulls. The Lakers with Kobe and Shaq were a little short for the level of dynasty this Spurs pair had.

Tim and Popp are slightly worse approximations in terms of basketball accomplishments that Jordan and Phil. However, boy are they great.

This team is kind of boring though…but who knows maybe Manu swatted more bats than we knew in his time? Some interesting conversations over wine?

Russell and the Celtics

The greatest winner of all time and the team that defined basketball for a decade. This man and team beat Wilt and Kareem like nothing.

Ask Jerry West how great Bill and the Celtics were.

There is not a lot of film, and that would be the biggest hurdle. Heck, there is not a lot of great game film let alone off the court stuff. This would be a lot of stories.

That hurdle would be tough to overcome, but the rightfully cantankerous Russell is a fascinating man. Much of his contributions to basketball and culture are lost to history, so maybe the youth need a reminder?

Shaq/Kobe and the Lakers

Not much needs to be said about this. Obviously, this would be a fun and fascinating documentary. If some film of them fighting could be dug up, it could make this really special.

Those 2000, 2001 Lakers teams were among the best ever. Shaw is one of the most physically dominant and entertaining big men ever. Kobe was a superstar in his own right.

Kobe stans would rejoice. This could be an awesome docuseries.

Kobe would have loved following in Jordan’s footsteps with this, I imagine.

Transcendent Player

We could also do a twist on this and focus on the person. While this documentary needed the bulls dynasty to elevate it to the level of intrigue it would reach, the main draw is Jordan.

There are some really good options out there if you eliminate the team aspect.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

My guy had winning too, but not in the dynastic way that Jordan did. The 80s was a back and forth with the Celtics and by then he also had Magic.

Kareem may be the greatest basketball player of all time if you include from high school through his longevity in the Association.

Take a look at the accolades on his Wikipedia page.

This is a truly fascinating man, whose impact is monumental off the court. I would love more Kareem content.

Tiger Woods

Tiger captivated a world and brought golf publicity it never dreamed of. For many years, he was the biggest and most dominant star on the planet.

Also, I’m not sure if you remember, but a bunch of other interesting stuff happened too.

Let’s deep dive into Tiger like never before. This is an obvious one if Tiger ever let it happen, which I don’t think he would.

Maybe after seeing The Last Dance it will tug on his ego? I know I’m here for this, is all I’m saying.

Muhammad Ali

Who doesn’t love any and all Ali content.

Yes please. Obviously.
