The biggest news in the NFL recently is that Aaron Rodgers wants out of Green Bay. The disgruntled quarterback has voiced his frustrations with the Green Bay Packers. The Packers went behind Rodgers’s back when they selected Jordan Love in the first round a few seasons ago. Rodgers had no idea that the Packers were going to make that move. The Packers did not call Rodgers to tell him they were taking a quarterback. That is something even the Giants got right. When they drafted Daniel Jones, Dave Gettleman called Eli Manning prior to the draft that they were taking a QB. Rodgers did not get the same treatment.
Because of his frustrations, Rodgers has made it known that he would like to play somewhere else. Some teams rumored to be in the mix are the 49ers, Raiders, and the Broncos. However, there may be no team better prepared to acquire Aaron Rodgers than the New York Giants.
The Draft Capital
The Packers royally screwed up their 2020 draft. With their first pick, they drafted Jordan Love knowing he would not play anytime soon. With their second round pick, they used it on AJ Dillon. If you notice, neither of those players really helps Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers wanted playmakers and the Packers drafted his replacement and an okay running back instead of offensive weapons to help one of the greatest QBs of all time.
The Giants also screwed up one of their recent drafts in 2018 when they took Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick. Under Joe Judge, they now understand the importance of draft capital and positional value. That was shown in this year’s draft. They missed out on their guy in Devonta Smith, so they traded down with the Bears. They now have two first round picks in the 2022 draft as a result of that trade which would be very enticing for the Packers. The Giants are transitioning into win-now mode and trading at least one first and more draft picks for Rodgers is a no brainer.
Why it makes sense for the Giants
Like I mentioned above, the Giants are transitioning into win now mode. With the addition of Kenny Golladay, a defense that can dominate, and a healthy Saquon Barkley, this team can really make some noise in the NFC East. However, Daniel Jones is still a big question mark. He showed a lot of promise in his rookie season, but honestly had a very poor sophomore season. Jones is running out of excuses and running out of time to be the QB of the present and future. Acquiring Aaron Rodgers would immediately catapult the Giants into Super Bowl contenders. Not necessarily favorites, but contenders. Rodgers would love playing with Golladay, Evan Engram, and Kadarius Toney. Overall, they would be some of the best all around offensive weapons Rodgers has played with.
Right now, this is pure speculation. Dave Gettleman and Joe Judge seem committed to Daniel Jones for at least one more season. It seems Rodgers is intrigued by playing with the Raiders for some odd reason. If the Packers don’t trade him, you may be looking at your new full-time Jeopardy host. The Giants are in a position to make a deal for a disgruntled quarterback, like Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers and the New York Giants may be a dream, but is a dream that the Giants should try and make real.
