The Machine Is Out Of Order

News broke late yesterday afternoon that the Angels have Designated For Assignment Albert “The Machine” Pujols. What does this mean? As the great Jake Taylor once said, it means you just died and went to the minors. Well, not entirely the case, but pretty close to it.

What’s DFA’d mean?

When a player’s contract is designated for assignment, DFA, that player is immediately removed from his club’s 40-man roster. The player is then put on waivers and If the player clears, he may be sent outright to the Minor Leagues or released. Albert is in his last year of a 10 year $240 million dollar contract. It is a sad, but necessary, way to see his tenure with the Angels end. The guy is truly a first-class player and even better person. If you are in your mid 20’s like me, you probably grew up idolizing and imitating his stance and swing. A guy that seems to be loved by everyone around the league and a fan favorite.

First Ballot Hall of Famer

Pujols undoubtedly will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Yes, he has stunk for the last 3 or 4 years, but his career numbers speak for themselves. He is a career .298 hitter with 667 home runs, 3253 career hits, 2112 RBI’s, a  WAR of 99.4, and an OPS of .921. He is in the top 5 of all-time home runs, top 3 in career RBI’s, number 15 on the all-time hits list, and number 5 in career doubles. What stands out to me the most out of all those unbelievable stats is even after batting below .250 each of the last 5 seasons, counting this one, he is still only .002 points away from a career .300 batting average. Yes, I am a guy that still holds value in batting average. It is crazy that more people don’t.

What is Next

I mean I think this goes without saying that there is just no way he plays in the minors. He is 41 and a surefire Hall of Famer, he has nothing left to prove. I hope he gets picked up by another team but at this point, don’t think it’s likely. He is currently batting .198 with 5 bombs and 12 RBI’s. If he were to get picked up by a team, I think it is best in the role of veteran leadership on a young National League contending team that could use him as a pinch hitter off the bench in late-game situations for their pitcher. I still think there is a little pop in his bat and think he still wants to play. At the rate of all the injuries this year, why not take a flyer on him and see what to could do for your clubhouse. Again, do I think it will happen? No, probably not. I really think this is the end of the line for him. I just don’t want to believe it.

I hope he catches on somewhere and continues playing the game he loves. Pujols was and still is a fun guy to watch hit because at any moment he could give you a flashback of the moon bombs he’d hit back in his prime. The guy is an all-time great and we are witnessing yet another legends career wrap up. If this is the end for you Mr. Pujols, from baseball fans everywhere, thank you! You were a pleasure to watch and a great role model for young baseball players everywhere. Tip of the cap to you. Hope to see you suiting up for another team this year.
