I Got My Peaches Out in Georgia
What a circus. From the called back opening strip-sack TD, to the punt-off for the rest of the first half, to the luckiest fumble recovery of all time, to a roller coaster of a 4th quarter. This is why college football is such a special sport. The Georgia Bulldogs are National Champions again.
I Was Confident, Then I Wasn’t, Then We Won
I could go on and on about all the storylines coming into this game: Stet’s crazy walk-on career. Kirby’s history with the school and the narrative about him not being able to “win the big game.” Saban owning the state of Georgia. Bama never losing a Natty when they a Heisman-winner. The build up to this game had so much noise and hype. And now the Dawgs get to lick their wounds and head back to Athens as National Champs. What a time to be a degenerate 20 year-old at the University of Georgia.
Despite all the noise, I still felt confident in the Dawgs after the loss in the SEC Championship. I said this verbatim in my blog last week for those keeping track at home. However, when Stetson’s fumble was confirmed as a Bama recovery in the Red Zone, I lost every ounce of confidence that I previously had. One of my buddies put it best, “This confirms Saban has a deal with the devil.” It just felt like Bama was going to find a way to stomp on Georgia’s throat yet again. And then the Stetson Bennett Experience happened.
Legends of Georgia
My guy is forever a legend in the state of Georgia. Start the mock-up for the statue tomorrow. Maybe not quite Herschel Walker status. But this dude’s story and performance tonight is legitimately a fairytale. The way he responded to that nightmare fumble situation was so legendary. The cherry on top would’ve been if he was able to look cool smoking his cigar like Burrow did back when LSU won. Poor dude couldn’t keep his cigar lit to save his life. But that’s okay, because Stet is forever that dude. Him crying tears of joy on the sideline after Ringo’s pick-six is why sports rule everything else in the world.
Kirby is also now forever a UGA legend. A Georgia boy through and through, finally slaying the dragon that is Nick Saban. Kirby had a helluva game plan for this rematch, and stuck to it all night even when things got sketchy. You gotta tip your cap, as usual, to the Tide. Saban was all class in the loss, and Bama will obviously reload to contend next year. But for now, Kirby sits on the Iron Throne. Saban, Dabo, Ryan Day, and everyone else must bend the knee for the foreseeable future.
Closing Thoughts
A few more random notes from the evening: I’m gonna miss watching this defense play. A lot of future Pro-Bowlers in that group who so many teams in the League will love to have. Also, why did the camera pan to the outside of Lucas Oil Stadium after every single commercial break? Sure, it’s a unique-looking stadium, but not cool enough to show 50 times throughout the evening. The ESPN camera crew was treating Lucas Oil like Fenway or Wrigley in Mid-October.
Lastly, they did my guy Nakobe dirty by giving him the wrong hat. That’s just an inexcusable mistake by whoever was in charge of handing out hats. A guy like Nakobe deserves nothing but the best, shame on you hat distributors. Also, Chris Fowler is straight up the best in the business. I’ll now forever associate his beautiful voice with my team winning a natty. Now I get to watch SportsCenter until 2 AM and soak every second of this up. HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS!!!
