Like lacrosse players, hockey players can be known for legendary hair. Having a good haircut (or lack there of) is simply part of being an NHL player. There’s the classic mullet, some legendary facial hair, and the slicked back greatness that is Barry Melrose. Today, we take a loot at some of the best hair in NHL history.
When you think of the mullet, you have to think of Penguins era Jaromir Jagr. Mr. Jagr is obviously known for his play on the ice and ranking just behind Wayne Gretzky in all time points. However, Jagr absolutely rocked the mullet in his early days with the Penguins. It was flowing out the back of the helmet like all hockey hair should. He unfortunately cut it short in his later days with the Pens, but grew it back out at the end of his career with the Panthers. Everyone should strive to have hockey hair like Jaromir Jagr.
Lanny McDonald had the stache to end all staches. The former Flames captain had hair and the mustache to match the logo on his jersey. Lanny had himself a heck of a career. He finished his career with 500 goals and 506 assists and a Stanley Cup. His mustache is probably more famous than the player at this point, but honestly, I totally understand why.
Unlike Jagr and McDonald, Fraser never played in the NHL. However, Kerry Fraser is one of the most decorated and respected officials in NHL history. Part of what made Fraser famous was that he never wore a helmet for the vast majority of his career. He refereed over 1,900 regular season games and 260 playoff games. Fraser had himself one of the neatest heads of hair ever seen in the NHL. Unfortunately, the referees association made it mandatory for officials to wear helmets near the end of Fraser’s career.
I had the pleasure of meeting Kerry Fraser about 10 years ago after his retirement. I met him at his book signing when I got an autographed copy of his book for my dad. He took about an hour after his presentation to just chat with me, an early teenager who was trying to learn more about hockey and its history. He was so nice and it was one of the biggest highlights of that time in my life.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but I feel like these three men define hair and the NHL. There are countless other names I could mention like Ron Duguay (my mom is a big fan), Brent Burns, and Erik Karlsson. Hair and hockey go hand in hand, and these gentlemen have some of the best hair in NHL history.
