Takeaways from Kobe Bryant’s Services Yesterday

Yesterday was one of the saddest days in the sports world in a very long time. It’s been about a month since Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gigi, died unexpectedly in a plane crash. The public memorial service was held yesterday on the 24th of February, rightfully so. Now that the service is said and done, I have some thoughts on the experience as a whole.

Michael Jordan Loved Kobe

Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest basketball player of all time. Even he had a tough time keeping his emotions in check. When he said that he lost a little piece of himself and “rest in peace little brother”, that hit hard. Jordan could have very easily just kept it formal. But even he acknowledged that for Kobe, he’ll probably be a meme again for the next several years. What an emotional tribute by M.J. here!

Vanessa Bryant’s Speech Stood Out

We all know how good of a father Kobe Bryant was to his daughters. Hearing his wife Vanessa talk about just how great of a father he was to their children was truly touching. The strength that Vanessa had to get up on stage and talk about Kobe after everything that happened will never be forgotten. She lost a husband and a daughter, that’s enough for anybody to want to shut down for a very long time. But the strength Vanessa had in her speech was truly inspiring to see and admire.

Shaq’s Unique Perspective

Anytime Shaq speaks, it’s must see television. We all figured Shaq would speak on Kobe’s behalf in some way or another. The story that he tells about Kobe’s competitiveness is second to none. Shaq nails the delivery of the joke in only a way Shaq can do so. Even though they had their beef after Shaq left the Lakers, the love will never be lost between those two. Whether it’s winning championships or laughing about Kobe’s competitiveness, the mutual respect is there.

In Conclusion

Kobe’s legacy will last forever. So will Gigi’s legacy. I’m pissed I won’t be able to see Gigi excel at UCONN and then ball, like her dad did, in the WNBA. Yesterday’s services were touching and it shows just how important Kobe was to the NBA community. Goodbye Kobe and Gigi, you will never be forgotten! Mamba and Gigi…out.
