Tajon Buchanan secures a move to Club Brugge

The New England Revolution announced on Tuesday that winger Tajon Buchanan has completed a move to Belgian side Club Brugge.

The fee is officially undisclosed, but reports value the move at around $7 million. If accurate, this figure would more than double the previous highest transfer fee received by the Revolution.

The 22-year-old Buchanan has emerged as a star over three seasons in New England. He has been particularly effective in 2021. The Canadian has scored six goals and picked up five assists in 17 MLS appearances for the 2021 Revs.

In Club Brugge, Buchanan will be joining a perennial title contender in Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League. Club Brugge have won two straight league titles under manager Philippe Clement. The Blue-Black have picked up five titles in the past seven years. The last time they finished outside of the top two league positions was 2012/13.

The good news for Revs fans is that Tajon Buchanan won’t be going anywhere just yet. Buchanan will remain in New England on loan until the conclusion of the 2021 MLS season.

The young winger has made it clear that he is motivated to continue fighting for the silverware that will cap off what has already been a great season.

Significance of Tajon Buchanan’s Move

First and foremost, Tajon Buchanan’s move to Club Brugge is a great reward for the progress he has made on the field over the past few seasons. Buchanan has developed into an exciting player with the Revs, and he has earned the right to test his skills over in Europe.

On top of their success in the Belgian league, Club Brugge have participated in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League each of the past two seasons. They will be there once again in 2021/22. This is an exciting opportunity for Buchanan to play in one of club football’s most prestigious competitions.

Additionally, the move generates a good amount of cash that the Revs can use to reinvest in the squad. It also demonstrates that New England is a viable option for young players looking to develop and turn heads across the pond.

Buchanan has been a stud for the Revolution, particularly in 2021. The fact that he will remain in New England for the duration of the season gives him a perfect opportunity to leave on his terms.

Final Thoughts

Tajon Buchanan won’t be the only young North American at Club Brugge. He will be joined by the 20-year-old American Owen Otasowie, who joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in August.

Buchanan’s move from MLS to Belgium also mirrors that of 22-year-old American Mark McKenzie. McKenzie moved from the Philadelphia Union to KRC Genk back in January. The center back seems to have settled in well, having already played 345 minutes across five appearances.

Tajon Buchanan is a talented player, so there is no denying that his departure in January will be a big loss on the field for the Revolution. However, it will also be a very exciting change of scenery for the player.

Revs fans across New England will be hoping for nothing but the best for Tajon Buchanan in Belgium.
