The Super Bowl is Sunday, Remember?

It has been brought to my attention that the Super Bowl is actually happening this Sunday even though the Patriots are not in it. I honestly had forgotten that it was even possible. However my spirits were lifted once again when I heard that even though Tom Brady will not be playing, Tom Brady Jr. will be.  It’s the small victories that will keep us going.

Now it’s possible that the lack of Patriots is the actual reason why I keep forgetting that it’s happening but it may also be because after everything that’s happened in the sports world this past weekend, it seems a bit unimportant. Whatever the reason is, it seems to be an after thought for a lot of people. I’m sure the people of San Francisco and Kansas City are very excited about this but it doesn’t seem to be reaching out of there. I remember being excited about non-Patriots Super Bowls in the past but it’s just not the case this year.

Whatever the reason is, it’s time to start getting ready for it. Let’s start with the Kansas City Chiefs.

There’s no doubting that Patrick Mahomes is becoming an elite QB quickly. In his first full season as a starter, he brought his team to the AFC Championship and in his second, the Super Bowl. Mahomes hasn’t had to carry his team all on his own however. With offensive talents like Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, the QB has been able to preform well all season. Though he missed some time during the season because of an injury and he didn’t necessarily have the MVP season he had last year, Mahomes still out preformed most of the QB’s in the league.

One thing to look out for as a weakness for the Chiefs is their defense. It has under preformed for most of the season and has been a bit inconsistent. Most recently, they had given up 24 points to the Texans in the first quarter before Patrick Mahomes had to drag them back. If they want to stay in this game, they have to stop the run and force Jimmy Garoppolo to turn the ball over. They need to give Mahomes some room to get settled and do his thing.

For the 49ers, they have an offense that does not necessarily have to run through their QB. While this could cause some issues, it seemed to work well for them against the Packers in the NFC Championship game. The 49ers have succeeded this season, not because they have the high name, huge talent players but because they have the most complete team in the NFL. They have enough talent at every position that their team clicks well. After going 4-12 last season, they were able to draft Nick Bosa who has made a huge impact on the teams defense. That added to the return of Jimmy Garoppolo from his ACL injury brought them to where they are now.

Unfortunately though, Jimmy G may be their weak spot. While they didn’t need him to pass more than 8 times in their last game, they’re going to this Sunday. Not only is he going to have to pass, he’s going to have to pass accurately. Hopefully, he learned something from Tom Brady after years of being his back up because in order to beat the Chiefs, he’s going to have to pull off a Brady like performance.

For those of you, like me, that have had a hard time remembering that the Super Bowl is this weekend, it starts at 6:30pm ET on Fox. If the lack of Patriots is making it hard to decide if you’ll watch, just remember: you can eat fried foods, watch fun commercials, hang out with your friends and family without the added heart attack of a Tom Brady game winning drive. It might be a nice break.
