Super Bowl LIV: A Look Into The Future of QB’s

One of the running narratives this season is the changing of the guard when it comes to the style of QB play in this league. For a long time, people like Tom Brady, Drew Brees and the Manning brothers have set the standard. However, in the last two seasons, the more mobile, running QB’s have made names for themselves. Now, in Super Bowl LIV, those two styles are going to put head to head.

For the NFC, representing the old way of doing things, we have Jimmy Garoppolo. After years of living in Tom Brady’s shadow, it’s time for Jimmy G to shine. Though the 49ers out played the Packers, it was not really the play of their quarterback that gave them the edge. By the end of the game, he had only thrown the ball 8 times with 6 completions. Even with one injured running back, their run game dominated the game and was eventually what gave them the win.

On the other side for the AFC we have Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes, since last season, had been the staple for the new wave of QB. He can run, he can pass. Honestly, there isn’t much he can’t do. Unlike Garoppolo, he did play a very key role in his teams win. He ended his day 23/35, 294 passing yards and 53 rushing yards.

This Super Bowl is going to set probably set the pace for where the NFL is going. Maybe, after 100 seasons, it’s for the best that it moves in a new one. If the 49ers win the Super Bowl, it will still have to take the performance of Jimmy Garoppolo’s life to make a case for the old style of QB’s to continue to reign supreme. If they win for the same reasons they won the NFC Championship, it will be clear that they won because they had a more complete team and not because they had a superior QB.

However, if the Chiefs win, it will more than likely be mostly because of Patrick Mahomes. All season, their team have showed some cracks especially on defense. Mahomes has been good about picking up the pieces though.

As much as many people wanted to see Lamar Jackson to be the guy that brought in the era of the mobile QB, Mahomes was here first. It is only fitting that he is the guy that does it.

Now as fun as mobile QB’s are to watch, it brings up the question of how long will it last. These guys take a lot of hits. It’s hard to think that these guys will have the career longevity of Brady and Brees with playing a more physical game.

Only time will tell what the future holds for the landscape of the NFL.
