With the 2020 MLB Hall of Fame class is set to be announced tomorrow, former players eligible for the ballot await to see if there name gets called to Cooperstown.
The only true shoe-in appears to be first-year ballot member Derek Jeter, but that does not mean the other names on the ballot have no shot at being elected. Scott Rolen, Billy Wagner, and Curt Schilling all have a good chance at upping their vote percentage, but those three former all-stars are hardly headline the ballot. All eyes still remain on the “steroid guys”. Most notably, former San Fransisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds.
Bonds is a lightning rod for baseball fans. His suspected steroid use mixed with his outrageous production make it difficult for fans to embrace the true greatness he displayed on the field. That’s why, even though it may be hard to admit, the writers of the BBWAA need to accept the fact that Bonds belongs in the hall.
I used to be someone that would be against any possibility of a PED (performance enhancing drug) user in Cooperstown. Why should a cheater be allowed in a place that honors the great and noble players throughout the history of major league baseball?
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve welcomed the idea that the “steroid era” is a time in baseball history that should be immortalized. It isn’t like I condone the cheating that players participated in, but if 85% of the league was using steroids ,like former player Jose Canseco has said, the league had a pretty even playing field.
Even if that wasn’t the case, did steroids help Barry Bonds make contact at the rate he did? Bonds still worked hard to be at the top of the league. Don’t get me wrong, his numbers were most definitely boosted by his suspected use, but look at his numbers. Bonds won the MVP four straight seasons and seven times in total. He holds the home run record and a career OPS of 1.051. The former Pittsburgh Pirate was a star for over two decades.
Besides, if the reason you don’t believe he should be in is the PED use take a look at some of the guys in Cooperstown right now. Member and former catcher Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez, another reported user, said, “only god knows,” if he ever used PED’s. I find that hard to believe.
