I want to start off by saying this. There is NOTHING like the NBA offseason. I’ve said this thousands of times by this point but it blows the regular season and playoffs out of the water. The free agents, the rumors, the hate, the crap talk going on about Kyrie after he walked out the door on the Celtics. All of it is electric. And today in free agent rumors, Stephen A. Smith is dropping BOMBS.
“I have received the word that Kawhi Leonard is seriously considering the Los Angeles Lakers.”

This is actually a huge report being that the Lakers have somehow maneuvered the cap enough to free up enough space for another max contract. The cap confuses the hell out of me in this league because there’s so much that goes into it. After LA made the massive move for Anthony Davis, I thought that was it in regards to absolute unit sized moves for them and LeBron. They would have to do a TON. And they did it. Now, they can go actually out and bring in Kawhi Leonard which would make them one of the most lethal teams this league has seen in the last 20 years.
And me saying that has everything to do with my respect for Kawhi Leonard. Watching what he did this season with Toronto and in the end, bring the first title to that franchise was wildly impressive.
He’s one of the best in the game on both ends of the court and that’s indisputable. He appears to be a humble guy, rarely makes waves aside from when he shot his way out of San Antonio and can go toe to toe with the best the league has to offer. He’s an MVP caliber player year in and year out and the type of talent that alters franchises like he did this past season.
Imagine linking Kawhi Leonard up with LeBron James and Anthony Davis? They become the perennial favorite to win the NBA Championship and it won’t be close. Especially with the way things are shaking out injury wise down in Golden State.
Do I think this is going to happen? No. One thing that I think we’ve all realized with Kawhi is that he doesn’t want to be the center of attention. He’s not a “cameras in your face” kind of guy. And yeah, with LeBron and AD both in the picture with the Lakers, he won’t be the number one guy the media flocks to. But will he be a focal point? Of course.
I still think he ends up with the Clippers regardless. No matter what team he attaches himself to this summer, they’ll instantly become championship contenders. The fame and publicity I don’t think matters to this guy. I don’t think he’ll want what comes with signing with the Lakers. Stephen A.’s gonna Stephen A. I just don’t put too much stock into this report. He’ll listen to what they have to say, but he won’t sign there. It’s the Clippers or Toronto.
