Stanford’s right-hander Alex Williams impressive to start the season, the Cardinals look like national title contenders

The Stanford Cardinals have started the college baseball season 6-2, large in part due to the team’s pitching. The Cardinals came into this season as a Pac-12 favorite and after their first eight games are looking like a national title contender.

Stanford has thrown four shutouts this season including 24 straight innings of zeroes on the scoreboard. One of the pitchers that has been electric to being the season is right-hander Alex Williams. The senior from Castro Valley, California is 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in two starts leading the rotation.

In his first start, Williams earned the win over Cal State Fullerton, throwing three scoreless innings, yielding two hits while punching out one batter. Stanford would win 1-0 which was the Cardinals first 1-0 victory since beating Oregon State last season. The last time that the Cardinals shutout an opponent on Opening Day was against Cal State Fullerton back in 2016.

Williams was even better in his second start of the season against Indiana. The 6-foot-3 righty would throw five innings giving up one run while striking out six. He would throw 63 pitches, 45 of them for strikes in the win over Indiana. Williams faced one over the minimum after the first two batters reached to start the game.

While Williams has been solid to begin the season, there are others on the pitching staff that is elevating the Cardinals to national title contenders.

Quinn Mathews tossed six scoreless innings in a win over Arkansas at the Round Rock Classic. Mathews struck out a career-high 10 strikeouts while allowing two hits against the fourth-ranked Razorbacks.

Mathews was named the Pac-12 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for last week. The junior from Aliso Viejo, Calif. collected 13 strikeouts while yielding two hits in two games.

Left-hander Drew Dowd has started the season 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA and will provide a three-headed punch in the rotation with Williams and Mathews.

The Cardinals have strong pitching and they’ve showed their potential in the first week of the season. While there is a long way to go in this collegiate season, the Cardinals look primed for a run to Omaha.
