The Red Sox season is finally over (Thank God!) and we can finally stop watching that awful team for the rest of the year. But there’s one question on everyone’s mind, particularly in the outfield. Is Andrew Benintendi at the point where we as Red Sox fans might have to worry about them? Chris Smith wrote an article and honestly, it got my attention. It should also be getting all of your attention as well.
Andrew Benintendi’s dismal 2020 Boston Red Sox season is a continuation of an offensive decline that started in August 2018 https://t.co/KJFjm6FTkf

Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that need to be asked about Benintendi. Will he bounce back in 2020? And should we truly be worried? Let’s go over it.
The Consistent Decline Since 2018
During the World Series year, Andrew Benintendi hit .290 on the season. For anybody that doesn’t know, that’s pretty good. But since then, he has rapidly declined. In 2019, he hit .266. Then in 2020…well…we saw what happened. Benintendi went 4-39 at the plate with 1 double for a .103 average before going on the season ending injured list. I think fans have some valid evidence here that is worrisome. If Benintendi doesn’t pick it up in 2020 offensively, it’s not going to be fun for us Red Sox fans.
Benintendi is tied to the Red Sox for another year. For his age 27 season in 2022, he is eligible for arbitration before he can become an unrestricted free agent in 2023. Aren’t you a little concerned about that? I know I am! Especially if Benintendi can’t be steady offensively for the Red Sox again, starting next season.
Is it concerning? You bet it is! But would I hit the panic button JUST yet? No. He didn’t play much in 2020. 2020 is a weird year anyway, so we’ll give him a pass for this season. But again, there should be a careful eye on Andrew Benintendi during the 2021 season.
