Should The Buffalo Bills Sign Alex Smith?

The NFL offseason is here and free agency is right around the corner. For once, the Buffalo Bills don’t need to worry about looking for a starting quarterback but they definitely should consider upgrading the backup position. Matt Barkley’s contract is up and if the Bills don’t sign him, then they should try to bring in Alex Smith.

Official: Washington has released Alex Smith; Now have over $54 million in cap space - Hogs Haven

According to Pro Football Reference, Smith threw six touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight games last year with Washington, while also throwing for 1,582 yards. After suffering a career threatening injury, Smith beat all odds and led Washington to a playoff appearance. His comeback story is truly remarkable and I do think he would be a good backup for Josh Allen.

With that being said, there are a couple things to consider. Number one, would Smith sign somewhere as a backup? He’s still capable of being a starter and as I mentioned earlier, the Bills have their starting quarterback. Number two, could the Bills afford him? Buffalo is tight when it comes to cap space and even though Smith could be a cheap signing, he might want more money, especially if he’s looking to be a starter.

We’ll see what happens but if Buffalo can somehow sign Smith, I think it would be a good move and he can provide more leadership for Allen.
