SATW Episode Eight: MLB Lockout, WNBA, and WWE

In this episode of the podcast, I discuss the MLB lockout and why the place should be placed upon the shoulders of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and the owners. Since 2002, the revenues for MLB have increased by an average of eight percent per year. However, the owners proposed luxury tax threshold increase from 2022 to 2026 is just 4.5 percent overall.

 

MLB Revenue and TV Deals

In 2019, the revenue for America’s pastime was a record $10.7 billion dollars. What’s more, MLB and Turner Sports reached a seven-year, $3.75 billion dollar TV contract rights extension. Important to note: this deal was a 65% increase from their prior deal. Next, the league and Disney agreed to a seven-year, $3.85 billion dollar in total. Significantly, both the Disney and Turner Sports deals are scheduled to start this year.
 

WNBA

Furthermore, I talk about the WNBA fining the New York Liberty $500,000 for violating the CBA for chartering flights for their players. According to the CBA, teams are to fly commercial for games on the road and players must receive “premium ceremony” seating if available.

Surprisingly, the option of terminating the franchise was put on the table. All things considered, the Liberty made a proposal to make charter flights universal for all teams in the WNBA. But, there wasn’t enough support for it.
