Ron Roenicke Will NOT Return to Red Sox in 2021

It was expected. But now, it’s made official. The Boston Red Sox finish their season today and they will be looking for another new manager. The Red Sox came out today and announced that Ron Roenicke will not return as manager for the 2021 season.

Now obviously, this shouldn’t come as a surprise to really anybody. But there’s a few things to think about with the official announcement.

He Wasn’t Given a Good Team

Let’s face it. Ron Roenicke was basically in a no win situation. The pitching staff? Yeah, you’re not going to win many games when Nathan Eovaldi is your best pitcher. Plus, Chris Sale and Eduardo Rodriguez were done for the season before games were played. Sure, the offense is a pretty good one. But you can’t win anything in this league without pitching. With the way the Red Sox handled free agency this past offseason, you can’t blame Roenicke for that.

Will Alex Cora Return?

So now, this is the question that is on everyone’s mind that’s a Red Sox fan. With Roenicke gone, who will be the next manager? The popular opinion seems to be bringing back Alex Cora. It’s not too unrealistic. We saw what Cora did with that team after replacing John Farrell. He earned the respect of all of the players in the clubhouse. So why not bring back a guy that was successful in Boston?

If Not Cora, Then Who?

Jason Varitek? The Tampa Bay bench coach? Honestly, I don’t have too many other options. If anyone else has any insight, please let me know.

In Conclusion

Ron Roenicke was in a no win situation. He was the sacrificial lamb if you will. But 2020 is over and it’s time to look toward the future. Maybe Roenicke will come back as a bench coach. But as of right now, the quest for a new manager begins.
